MONMOUTH, Ill. – For the third consecutive year,
the Monmouth College Chapter of
Circle K will
provide support for Monmouth’s Jamieson Community Center through the
chapter’s “Sleep-in-a-Box” campaign. Students will begin the event on
Friday, April 11 at 7 p.m. and continue until 6 a.m. Saturday.
“This in our signature event,” said Shelly Mooney,
a sophomore from Chicago. “This is a great way for us to help our
community and make a difference in people’s lives.”
Mooney expects students from the 22 schools in the
Circle K I-I district - which encompasses Illinois and Eastern Iowa - to
participate in the program in which college students spend the night
sleeping in cardboard boxes.
“We’re fortunate this year, because our annual
training workshop is scheduled for the following day in Galesburg,” said
Mooney. “We expect over 80 students to participate.”
College students and area residents are encouraged
to drop off non-perishable canned goods and monetary donations at the
Sleep-in-a-Box site at Monmouth College, which will be held on the Wallace
Hall lawn. Proceeds from the event will be delivered to Jamieson Center.
Mooney explained that there will be an additional
event held in conjunction with the program as Circle K will present a
special program to increase homeless awareness Friday at 9 p.m. at the
campsite.
In the event of rain, she expects the night to
continue as planned.
“We will be there rain or shine collecting canned
goods and monetary donations for Jamieson Center, although we may try to
move inside if the weather gets too severe.”
