The
Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce named MC president Richard Giese its
Citizen of the Year at its 84th annual dinner on Jan. 18.
Local musician Leo
Ramer, who was the 2002 Citizen of the Year, presented the award, noting,
"We could not say enough how his work has been an exceptional benefit
not only to the entire world of Monmouth College but to our community as
well."
Giese, who was
nominated for the honor by outgoing chamber president Jackie Flater, is
completing his sixth year as president of Monmouth College. In her
nominating letter, read by Ramer, Flater wrote, "Dr. Richard Giese
has been a true friend to the Monmouth community and we are very fortunate
to be a partner with Monmouth College and Dr. Giese, as we look forward to
the future of Monmouth. I feel that Dr. Giese is very deserving of the
Citizen of the Year Award."
Ramer added that during
his tenure, Giese has initiated and completed a campus master plan, a
strategic plan, a plan to increase diversity, and a comprehensive
curriculum review. "Because of Giese's work in leading
fundraising campaigns," he said, "the college has seen the
addition of Bowers Hall, the Mellinger Center, Peacock Park, LeSuer Field
and Huff Athletic Center, as well as major renovations in Hewes Library
and Dahl Chapel and Auditorium."
In accepting the award,
Giese emphasized that his accomplishments would not have been possible
without efforts of "an excellent senior staff and a talented
faculty." He also thanked his wife, Sandy, whom he credited for
inspiring many of his ideas.
