MONMOUTH, Ill. — The Hon. Carl W. Vogt, former chairman of the National
Transportation Safety Board, will deliver the commencement address to
approximately 215 graduating seniors during Monmouth College’s 146th
annual commencement exercises on May 11. The Mother’s Day ceremony will
begin at noon on Wallace Hall Plaza.
Entitled “Liberal Arts for All Seasons,” Vogt’s address will discuss
the value of a liberal arts education as it prepares students to live in
an ever-changing world. In 1999, Vogt served his alma mater, Williams
College, as its interim president. Williams is consistently one of the
top-ranked national liberal arts colleges in the U.S.
The ceremony will conclude a weekend of activities honoring the Class
of 2003. Saturday’s events will include a baccalaureate service at 2 p.m.
in the Dahl Chapel and Auditorium, a farewell reception hosted by
President Richard Giese on Quinby House lawn at 4 p.m., and the
traditional “senior send-off” at 8 p.m. at VFW Post 2301, 830 N. G St.
The baccalaureate service will feature traditional religious hymns and
scripture readings by Monmouth College faculty, staff and students and a
litany led by President Giese. The Monmouth Chorale will sing several
hymns, and David Danaher, a freshman from Palos Heights, and Nelson
Voldeng, a sophomore from Bowler, Wis., will play “Amazing Grace” on the
bagpipes.
Seniors, their families, faculty, alumni and friends are invited to the
“senior send-off” dance with food and refreshments. The event is sponsored
by the Monmouth College Alumni Association.
On Sunday, seniors will gather for a class photo on the steps of the
Dahl Chapel and Auditorium at 10:30 a.m. They will then line up for the
traditional processional from Broadway to the Wallace Hall Plaza. Their
march will be accompanied by music from the Monmouth College Pipe Band.
Amanda Purchase, a senior from Abingdon and the college’s 2002 Lincoln
Laureate, will bid farewell to the college on behalf of the graduating
class, and President Giese will reciprocate on behalf of the college.
A reception for graduates and their families will be held on Dunlap
Terrace following the commencement ceremony.
