MONMOUTH, Ill. — The Monmouth Chorale and the
Monmouth College Wind Ensemble will perform a joint concert Feb. 7 at 7:30
p.m. at Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth as part of the
college’s celebration of Fine Arts Day.
The joint concert is free and open to the public.
Faith United Presbyterian Church is located two blocks south of the
college on South Eighth Street.
Performing this semester under the direction of
visiting professor of music Tom Blomster, the Wind Ensemble will present
what Blomster calls a variety of selections that demonstrate various
contrasts and differences.
Among the ensemble’s selections will be the
“Washington Post March” by Sousa; the overture to the opera “Russlan and
Ludmilla” by Glinka; “Come Sweet Death” by Bach; a piece titled “Nocturne”
by the Russian romantic composer Scriabin; and “Tiger Rag,” an “old
standard” which is a tribute to the Old Dixieland Jazz Band.
Following the Wind Ensemble’s performance, the
Monmouth Chorale, the college’s most highly auditioned choral ensemble,
will perform under the direction of Perry White, associate professor of
music and director of choral activities.
According to White, the Chorale will feature some
of the literature from its upcoming sesquicentennial concert tour of
Arizona and California, as well as some selections from recent concerts at
the college. Included in the new material will be a rendition of “Psalm
98” by the early baroque composer Heinrich Schütz, as well as a piece from
the contemporary composer Eric Whitacre called “Waternight.”
The joint concert serves as a prelude to the
office of admission’s Fine Arts Day on Feb. 8, which is designed to
attract prospective students in the areas of music, theater, and art.
