MONMOUTH, I ll. – The Monmouth College chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon has been living the old adage “It is better to give than to receive.”

Since late last fall, the Sig Ep fraternity has created a fund-raising business selling pizzas on the college campus. The proceeds have benefited a variety of community and campus organizations.

Chapter president Patrick Burke said the fraternity has made donations to Starting Point in Monmouth, a battered women’s home in Galesburg and three campus organizations - Students Organized for Service, Coalition for Women’s Awareness and Blue Key. The campus organizations were new beneficiaries this year.

In all, more than $500 has been raised for charities during the fall semester, a tradition Burke says the fraternity hopes to continue.

“We’re happy to be able to give something back to the community and the campus,” said Burke. “We hope to see our philanthropy program grow even more in the next academic year.”

Sigma Phi Epsilon was founded in 1901 in Richmond, Va. The fraternity was established at Monmouth as Illinois Gamma of Sigma Phi Epsilon in May of 1948 after merging with Theta Epsilon Omega fraternity. In some form, the fraternity has been a part of Monmouth College Greek life since 1907.
