MONMOUTH, Ill. — One of the most heart-warming,
endearing and enduring musicals of all time, “She Loves Me,” will be
produced by Monmouth College’s Crimson Masque theater organization April
1-4 in Wells Theater.
The curtain will open for the Thursday, Friday and
Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m., while the Sunday performance is a 2
p.m. matinee. Tickets, which are $6 for adults, $5 for students and senior
citizens and $4 for Monmouth College students, may be reserved by
contacting Bill Wallace at 309-457-2374, or
billw@monm.edu.
“She Loves Me,” first produced in 1963, is a
“sweet show about connections and feuds, first impressions and true love,”
says Alisa Roost, assistant professor of speech communication and theater
arts and director of the musical.
This heart-warming work by Jerry Bock and Sheldon
Harnick (the song-writing team of “Fiddler On The Roof”) and Joe Masteroff
(the book writer of “Cabaret”) is for those who like happy endings. The
story centers on Georg and Amalia, two feuding clerks in a European
parfumerie during the 1930s who secretly find solace in their anonymous
romantic pen pals. Little do they know that they are each other’s
respective correspondents (if you think this sounds like “You’ve Got
Mail,” you’re right – the movie is based on the play).
Funny, intelligent, honest and sentimental, “She
Loves Me” is a warm romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a
touch of old world elegance and nostalgia, yet as universal and relevant
as ever in this age of Internet romances.
Serving as musical director for the Crimson Masque
production is senior Kevin Goss of Park Ridge. Assistant director is
senior Tom Hill of Chicago. Junior Sara Poggi of Sandwich created the
choreography. Roost says the cast of more than three dozen includes
students from across the curriculum and involves a significant amount of
ensemble work.
