MC faculty, students usher in
spring with jazz concert and jam session
Release Date: February 26, 2004
MONMOUTH, Ill. — The jazz sounds of such legends
as Duke Ellington and John Coltrane will be featured when the Monmouth
College Jazz Band performs a special “pre-break concert and jam session”
on March 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Scotland Yard in the college’s Stockdale
Center. The event is free and open to the public.
According to James Betts, associate professor of
music and director of the Jazz Band, the group will also feature music
from a collection of Walt Disney films and some original compositions
written specifically for the 11-member ensemble. Also, a faculty trio,
featuring Jon Grahe, assistant professor of biology, on the trumpet; Dick
Johnston, associate professor of political economy and commerce, on the
harmonica; and Joel Nathan Rosen, visiting assistant professor of
anthropology and sociology, on the guitar, will accompany a special jam
session.
Audience members can take advantage of food and
refreshments served in the food court at Scotland Yard.
The Jazz Band performs both traditional big-band
literature and small-combo styles, including original compositions by the
members. Basic training in improvisational skills is included, and all
members get to play solos.
