Women and the movies is topic
of MC lecture
Release Date: March 16, 2004
MONMOUTH, Ill. — Chicago-based film critic and
freelance writer Jan Lisa Huttner will speak March 25 at Monmouth College
as part of an ongoing Women’s History Month observance.
The free lecture, entitled “Women Filmmakers/Women
Audiences: Working Together to Expand Opportunities for All,” will begin
at 7 p.m. in the Morgan Room of Poling Hall.
Huttner, who is also the director of college and
university relations for the Illinois division of the American Association
of University Women, will provide an overview of the “celluloid ceiling”
that has restricted opportunities for women filmmakers for decades. She
will then explain how recent box office and critical success, propelled by
support from women in the audience, is turning the tide in Hollywood and
beyond.
More information about Huttner is available at her
“Films for Two” Web site at
www.films42.com.
Since 1978, the month of March has annually been
designated by Congress as National Women’s History Month in order to
encourage the recognition of women’s accomplishments throughout history.
The significance of the month of March dates to 1857, when a group of
female New York garment workers staged a protest on March 8 to demand
better working conditions.
