MC archaeology lecture examines
Byzantine architecture

MONMOUTH, Ill. — Suna Cagaptay-Arikan will deliver
the next archaeology lecture at Monmouth College on April 5 at 7:30 p.m.
in the lower level classrooms of the Huff Athletic Center.
Cagaptay-Arikan, a Ph.D. candidate in architecture
at the University of Illinois, will speak on “Sharers of the Same Shade:
Byzantines and Ottomans in Early 14th-Century Bursa (Bithynia).” He has
been involved in an archaeological study of the re-use of Byzantine
buildings for Ottoman and Islamic purposes to demonstrate a constant
cultural, architectural and social overlap in early 14th-century Bithynia.
Sponsored by the Western Illinois Society of the
Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) and the MC Classics department,
the series is free and open to the public.
