MC music department recitals feature voice, instrumentals

Release Date: March 19, 2004

MONMOUTH, Ill. — Monmouth College’s spring music department recitals and a new program of departmental honors recitals, both featuring a variety of solo performances by student musicians and music majors, are scheduled in March and April. Both programs of recitals are free and open to the public.

The program of department honors recitals, set for March 24 at 7 p.m. in the Dahl Chapel and Auditorium, is the first of its kind at the college and features students selected by the faculty from the fall department recitals and from juries in December.

“This program is an excellent opportunity to hear some of our outstanding music students from every applied studio,” said Perry White, associate professor of music and director of choral activities.

Students selected to perform instrumental recitals include: sophomore Stacey Heinrich, Hampshire, and junior Jonathon Cole, Palos Heights, with an oboe duet; sophomore Brad Dix, Farmington, on the marimba; and pianist Erin Mann, a sophomore from Monmouth. Vocal soloists include baritone Kurt Carlson, a freshman from Woodstock; soprano Sarah Braun, a freshman from Morrisonville; mezzo-sopranos Sharon David, a freshman from Lisle, and Jordanna Banks, a sophomore from Grant Park; tenor Dan Scharlau, a sophomore from Batavia; and bass Kevin Goss, a senior from Park Ridge.

The annual spring music department recitals will be held April 7 at 4 p.m. in the Dahl Chapel and Auditorium. Performing will be students taking applied lessons in piano, voice, percussion, woodwinds and brass. White said the recitals will provide a unique opportunity for the public. Students are often heard in ensemble performances, but seldom does the public have a chance to appreciate their individual talents.

The recitals are a requirement of the coursework in applied lessons in the department.
