MC lecturer to offer suggestions for enhancing teens’ reading
experience
Release Date: February 18, 2005
MONMOUTH, Ill. — Deborah Appleman,
professor of educational studies and the liberal arts at Carelton
College in Northfield, Minn., will present a lecture at Monmouth
College on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Kasch Performance Hall in the
Dahl Chapel and Auditorium.
Entitled “Reading and Resisting Ideology, or What’s a Theory For?,”
Appleman’s talk will demonstrate how adolescents can use
contemporary literary theories to read both literary and cultural
texts. She will argue that it is important for teachers to help
students learn to read and, if necessary, resist the ideology that
is embedded in texts. Real-world examples and practical applications
will make this a lively and interactive presentation.
Appleman, who received her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate
degrees from the University of Minnesota, joined the Carleton
faculty in 1981 after an eight-year stint teaching high school
English in Mendota Heights, Minn. For the past 12 years, she has
served as an instructor at the Summer Teaching Institute and as
director of Carleton’s Summer Writing Program, a three-week
interdisciplinary writing program for high school juniors and
seniors.
