MCRelease Date: March 8, 2005
MONMOUTH, Ill. — James
De Young, professor emeritus of theater at Monmouth College, will deliver the
20th annual Bernice L. Fox Classics Lecture on March 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the
Whiteman-McMillan Highlander Room of the college’s Stockdale Center.
The lecture, which is
free and open to the public, will serve as prelude to the March 17-20 Crimson
Masque production of “Trojan Women” on the MC campus.
Entitled “Let the Tears
Fall: On Producing Euripedes’ ‘Trojan Women’ for a Modern Audience,” De
Young’s lecture will review ancient production methods and historical
criticism in the light of current archaeological evidence and commentary. He
will then discuss the way these insights can be used to inform the staging of
the play in the 21st century.
De Young taught at
Monmouth from 1963-2002 and directed numerous Crimson Masque productions at
the Little Theater and Wells Theater.
Established in 1985, the
lecture honors the late Bernice L. Fox, who taught classics at Monmouth from
1947 until 1981. The goal of this series is to illustrate the continuing
importance of classical studies in the modern world and the intersection of
the classics with other disciplines in the liberal arts.
