Jungck to give Monmouth’s McMullen Lecture in Biology

MONMOUTH, Ill. — John Jungck, professor of biology at Beloit
College, will present the annual Donald B. McMullen Memorial Lecture
in Biology at Monmouth College on April 5 at 11 a.m. in the Dahl
Chapel and Auditorium.
Entitled “Patterns of Nature,” the lecture is free and open to the
public. Jungck will also present a lecture for biology students
entitled “10 Equations That Changed Biology” at 4 p.m. in Room 423
in the Haldeman-Thiessen Science Center. Persons interested in
attending the afternoon lecture are asked to call the biology
department at 309-457-2361 to ensure seating.
Jungck has specialized in mathematical molecular evolution, the
history and philosophy of biology and science education reform. In
1986, he co-founded the BioQUEST Curriculum Consortium, a national
consortium of college and university biology educators devoted to
curricular reform across the nation. It promotes quantitative,
open-ended problem solving, collaborative learning, peer review,
research and civic engagement/social responsibility.
Jungck is a Fulbright Scholar (Thailand), a Mina Shaughnessy
Scholar, a Fellow of the National Institute of Science Education and
a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
The McMullen Lectureship in Biology was endowed in 1973 by Mrs.
Donald McMullen of Silver Springs, Md., in memory of her husband,
who was a biology professor at Monmouth College from 1928 to 1938.
The fund was established to assist the college in bringing to campus
outstanding scholars in the biological sciences.
