College Release Date:
March 14, 2006
MONMOUTH, Ill. — Benton Kidd, a curator from the University of Missouri,
will deliver the next is a series of archaeology lectures at Monmouth College on
March 20 at noon in the Whiteman-McMillan Highlander Room of the Stockdale
Center.
Sponsored by the Western Illinois Society of the Archaeological Institute of
America (AIA) and the MC Classics Department, the series is free and open to the
public.
Entitled “The Marble Trade in Antiquity: The Evidence of Ancient Marbles at the
University of Missouri,” Kidd’s talk will focus on the wealth of new evidence
coming to light about the extensive marble trade around the Mediterranean, both
in Greek and Roman worlds.
Kidd is the associate curator of ancient art at the University of Missouri’s
Museum of Art and Archaeology. The museum has had 10 ancient marbles analyzed
for quarry provenance, and Kidd’s talk uses the results of that study to shed
further light on the ancient marble trade and further the public’s understanding
of the museum’s marble pieces.
