MC to host lectures by celebrity speakers Raza, Cruz

MONMOUTH, Ill. — Monmouth College will host convocation lectures by
internationally-recognized speakers Raheel Raza and Nadinne Cruz in a two-day
span. Part of the college’s “Introduction to Liberal Arts” curriculum, the
lectures will be held in the Dahl Chapel and Auditorium and are free and open to
the public.
Entitled “Their Jihad … Not My Jihad,” Raza’s lecture will be presented Oct. 24
at 11 a.m. A noted journalist and poet, Raza was born in Pakistan. She has
traveled extensively throughout the world, including the Middle East, and
currently lives in Canada. Through her work with print and electronic media,
Raza addresses a variety of issues such as the status of women, arranged
marriages and media stereotypes. More information on her is available at

On Oct. 27 at 11 a.m., Cruz will speak on “Bridging Diversity and Difference in
Community Service.” From 2000 to 2003, Cruz was director Stanford University’s
Haas Center for Public Service, which was ranked No. 1 for service learning
among colleges and universities by U.S. News and World Report. The
internationally-respected speaker, author and education consultant received the
2005 Alec Dickson Servant Leader Award from the National Youth Leadership
Council.
