Photo exhibition, film screening featured at Monmouth
College Release Date:
January 11, 2006
MONMOUTH, Ill. — “Stealing Ireland,” an exhibition of photographs by former
Monmouth College visiting professor Dustin Morrow, will be on display Jan. 17
through Feb. 10 in the Len G. Everett Gallery in the college’s Hewes Library.
Taken throughout western Ireland over the past four years, the photographs
capture a view of the Emerald Isle seldom seen by tourists.
An artist and filmmaker, Morrow will also present a special screening of some of
his award-winning short films on Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. in the library’s Barnes
Electronic Classroom. Morrow will precede the screening, which will last about
75 minutes, with a short presentation.
A reception for Morrow will be held Jan. 20 at 3 p.m. in the gallery. The
exhibition, reception and screening are all free and open to the public.
According to Morrow, who was a visiting assistant professor of art at Monmouth
in 2003, the photographs in his exhibit explore the politics of representation
through a series of images that question what he calls “the tourist vision of
Ireland’s landscape. Through careful subject choice, composition and digital
post-production, the photographs point at the gap between the average tourist’s
take on Ireland and the reality of Irish everyday life.”
Morrow, who was born and raised in a rural central Illinois community, received
an M.F.A. degree from the department of cinema and comparative literature at the
University of Iowa. He currently serves as a visiting assistant professor of art
at Temple University, where he teaches courses in media production and theory.
His short digital movies have been shown around the world and have won numerous
awards, including an Emmy from the academic division of the Academy of
Television Arts and Sciences. His digital photography has been featured in a
number of art and culture magazines.
Morrow has directed theatrical productions, curated film-screening series and
written about film and media for various journals. During four years in Los
Angeles, he edited and directed music videos, short films and commercials.
The Len G. Everett Gallery is open during regular library hours: Monday through
Thursday, 8 a.m. to midnight; Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5
p.m., and Sunday, noon to midnight.
