Parlez-vous français? French films come to MCRelease Date:

MONMOUTH, Ill. — For the next month, Monmouth College will host a French
Film Festival, starting Jan. 26 with the film “Les triplettes de Belleville.”
Covering a “War and Exploration in Recent French Cinema” theme, the films will
be shown on Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the Dahl Chapel and Auditorium and are free
to the public. They also include “Notre musique” (Feb. 2), “The Hop” (Feb. 9),
“Monsieur Ibrahim” (Feb. 16) and “Amen” (Feb. 23).
Sponsored by the department of modern foreign languages, French Club and the
Public Affairs Committee, the festival is made possible with the support of the
Cultural Services of the French Embassy and the French Ministry of Culture, as
well as several other agencies.
Heather Brady, assistant professor of modern foreign languages, received a
Tournées Festival Grant to bring the films to campus. The grant was conceived as
a program to encourage schools to begin their own self-sustaining French film
festivals. Since its inception, the program has partnered with hundreds of
universities and made it possible for tens of thousands of students to discover
French-language films.
An advocate for off-campus study at Monmouth, Brady believes that students who
spend time abroad “view the world in a dramatically different way.” Bringing the
film festival to the campus community, she said, accomplishes a similar goal.
“In our modern foreign languages department, language is central to
understanding other cultures,” she noted. “We need to strengthen our
relationships with other countries, and this begins with education.”
