MC faculty to speak at two March 15 events Release Date:
March 8, 2006
MONMOUTH, Ill. — Monmouth College’s Stockdale Center will host two events on
March 15 that are free and open to the public.
The third of four International Luncheons this semester will be held at noon in
the Whiteman-McMillan Highlander Room and the semester’s final Great Decisions
discussion will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Tartan Room.
Faculty members Pei-Chen Chung, James Godde and Kristin Larson will deliver an
International Luncheon talk entitled “Memoirs of the Gaijin.” The trio shares
very different perspectives on Japan based on their disciplines, which are,
respectively, modern foreign languages, biology and psychology. Chung, who
teaches Japanese at Monmouth, lived for three years in Japan, while Godde and
Larson visited the country over Christmas break on a 10-day trip with 11 MC
students.
A buffet lunch, featuring international foods, is available. A meal ticket may
be purchased for $5 at the Stockdale Center’s Scan Plus office. Lunch
reservations must be made in advance by contacting professor Sue Holm at
309-457-2150 or susan@monm.edu.
English professor Mary Bruce, who has been to Africa several times, will lead
the Great Decisions discussion on “Pandemics and Security.” She will preface the
one-hour discussion with a 30-minute overview.
The series is sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association, a non-partisan,
non-governmental association that works to increase Americans’ understanding of
significant foreign policy issues. For more information, contact Ira Smolensky
at 309-457-2102 or Bill Urban at 309-457-2388.
