Social Awareness Week Release Date:
March , 2006
MONMOUTH, Ill. — The Monmouth College community will observe its second
annual Social Awareness Week, March 27-31.
Sponsored by the college’s Social Awareness Coalition (SAC), activities
will include a movie, a concert and a public lecture, all free and open to the
public. In addition, SAC will distribute information to the campus community
during meal hours at the Stockdale Center throughout the week.
Each day of the week will focus on one of five different themes: Excess,
Gender Equity, Environmental Issues, Diversity of Culture, and Power to the
People. The latter topic will deal primarily with handicap access issues and
activities will include the presentation of a petition to President Mauri
Ditzler, outlining proposed improvements.
In addition to calling attention to the amount of food that students
waste on a daily basis, Excess Day will include a screening of the documentary
film “Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price” at 7 p.m. in the Finley Lecture Hall
of Haldeman-Thiessen Science Center.
On Tuesday, the Gender Equity Day observance will conclude with an 8
p.m. concert in The Underground Cafe by folk/rock artist Jamie Anderson, who
will sing about peace, equality and “potato chips.” Students will also read
poetry at various times during the event.
Cleve Jones, the founder of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, will present a
lecture on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the Dahl Chapel and Auditorium. The quilt,
which is called “the largest on-going community arts project in the world,” was
conceived by Jones in 1985 during an annual candlelight vigil march honoring
Harvey Milk and George Moscone, the San Francisco politicians assassinated in
1978. The ever-growing project memorializes the lives of more than 85,000
Americans killed by AIDS.
Later on Wednesday, students Emily Zvolanek and Mollie Williams will
lead a discussion on environmental issues at 7 p.m. in the Finley Lecture Hall.
The next night at the same location and time, there will be discussion on
