installation Release Date:

MONMOUTH, Ill. — “Waves,” an unusual sculpture installation of ceramic and
cast metal tiles by Wisconsin artist Cam Choy, will be on display Jan. 22
through Feb. 16 in Monmouth College’s Len G. Everett Gallery in the Hewes
Library.
A reception for the artist will be held Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. in the gallery, and a
special workshop, primarily for MC sculpture students, will be held in the
college sculpture studio on Feb. 15 and 16. The exhibit, reception and workshop
are free and open to the public.
Choy, who is an associate professor of art with the Center for the Arts at the
University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, says the exhibit was inspired by his memories
of the Pacific Ocean when he lived in Hawaii.
An installation of cast plaster tiles and cast metal tiles which cover the
surface of the gallery floor, the exhibit mimics the wake created by vessels in
the ocean. The cast iron tiles are displayed on traditional gallery pedestals to
help break up the horizontal plane created by the plaster tiles.
In addition to the tiles, the installation also features a number of large,
fabric balloons filled with air to mimic the artist’s vivid memory of the clouds
and mist over the ocean surface.
“This exhibit addresses issues of my wish to remain close to home and the
ocean,” said Choy. “We all long for home. Hawaii is my home. The cultural
traditions and environment of my youth speak their voice through this work. My
hunger for home is deeply rooted in my being, a local plate lunch, intuitive and
natural.”
Choy received a BFA degree in sculpture from the University of Notre Dame, and
an MFA in sculpture from the University of Kentucky in 1991. He has been
extensively featured in regional and international exhibits and juried
invitationals across the country. Recent venues have included the “Inside Out”
regional invitational at the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan, the “Navy Pier
Walk 2003” international juried exhibition in Chicago and the 4th Biennial
Sculpture Invitational at the Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph, Mich.
The Everett Gallery is open during regular library hours: Monday through
Thursday, 8 a.m. to midnight; Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5
p.m., and Sunday, noon to midnight.
