MONMOUTH, Ill. — In an effort to resurrect an old tradition of
periodically displaying their own creative works of art, the faculty of
the Monmouth College art department will present a special exhibition in
the Len G. Everett Gallery in Hewes Library from Feb. 26 through March 23.
A closing reception for the artists will be held in the gallery on the
final day of the exhibit, starting at 2 p.m.
Free and open to the public, the exhibit will include seven of the art
department’s faculty displaying a “visually intriguing variety of work,”
said associate professor Stacy Lotz, who is chair of the department. “What
we really want to demonstrate to our students and to the community is that
our faculty members are more than just instructors. We are working artists
who are producing work as well as pursuing our careers in education.”
Lotz points out that just as it is with other disciplines on campus, the
art faculty struggles with the difficulty of maintaining a rigor in their
discipline while they are also teaching. “By periodically holding our own
exhibits, our students can see us working and modeling a behavior that
says artists can have a lifestyle that allows them to have a career while
still being creative in their artwork,” said Lotz, who hopes the faculty
will be able to display their work every other year.
Faculty represented in the exhibit and their particular media are: Brian
Baugh, assistant professor, paintings and drawings; Stephanie Baugh,
instructor, paintings; Tyler Hennings, instructor, paintings and drawings;
Steve Ingram, instructor, photography; Lotz, large steel sculptures;
Cheryl Meeker, professor, ceramics; and Mary Phillips, curator for the
Shields and permanent collections, watercolors.
The Everett Gallery is open during regular library hours: Monday through
Thursday, 8 a.m. to midnight; Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.
to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to midnight.
