Monmouth team ranks high in world-wide competition
Release Date:
February 15, 2007
MONMOUTH, Ill. — Four Monmouth College business students are currently
ranked in the top 25 in a world-wide competition sponsored by McGraw-Hill.
For the week of Feb. 5-11, the overall score posted by the team of seniors Raun
Singleton of Roseville and Blair Stewart of Surrey, B.C., and juniors Ann Sims
of Alexis and John Tiffy of Midlothian was ranked 16th among more than 500
college teams in the GLO-BUS competition. They are one of nine teams from
professor Don Capener’s “Entrepreneurism” class who are being evaluated through
the business skills decision-making simulation.
“Their decisions relate directly to their acumen in finance, marketing,
management and accounting,” reported Capener.
GLO-BUS is the world’s only truly global simulation in which the focus is on
competitive strategy, says the simulation’s Web site. An online exercise, it
pits teams of students against each other running rival digital camera
companies. Company operations parallel those of actual digital camera companies.
Mirroring the real business world, companies compete in a global market arena,
selling digital cameras in four geographic regions – Europe-Africa, North
America, Asia-Pacific and Latin America.
Company co-managers must make decisions relating to a number of business
variables. “The challenge, according to GLO-BUS, “is to craft and execute a
competitive strategy that results in a respected brand image, keeps the company
in contention for global market leadership and produces good financial
performance as measured by earnings per share, return on investment, stock price
appreciation and credit rating.”
