MC’s Gadre to discuss India at International LuncheonRelease Date:
February 20, 2007
MONMOUTH, Ill. — Vasant Gadre, an assistant professor in Monmouth College’s
department of modern foreign languages, will present the next International
Luncheon lecture on Feb. 28 at noon in the Whiteman-McMillan Highlander Room of
the college’s Stockdale Center.
Titled “Incredible India,” his talk will introduce the audience to the country
with a population of more than one billion that is known for its linguistic,
racial, ethnic and religious diversity.
“Octavio Paz has described India as a historical and ethnographic museum,” said
Gadre. “He is obviously not talking about art objects and antiques encapsulated
in a subcontinent, but of a living museum, one in which the most modern
modernity coexists with archaisms that have endured for several thousand years.”
A buffet lunch, featuring international foods, is available. A meal ticket may
be purchased for $6.50 in the food service office in Stockdale Center. Lunch
reservations must be made in advance by contacting professor Sue Holm at
309-457-2150 or susan@monm.edu.
