Moore named to full-time chemistry position at MC
Release Date:
February 9, 2007
MONMOUTH, Ill. — Ultimately, Monmouth College’s search for a new biochemist for its chemistry department did not have to go far from home, as visiting professor Laura Moore has accepted the tenure track position.
A 1990 magna cum laude graduate of Carleton College, Moore earned her Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry at Stanford University. She is originally from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where she was surrounded by science growing up. Both of her parents are scientists, and her family also ran a mink farm.
“Laura was clearly the best candidate,” said Pete Gebauer, chair of the chemistry department. “I think it’s important that people know we did a full-on, nationwide search.”
Moore, who taught at Illinois Wesleyan University for six years prior to coming to MC, said she is especially looking forward to being a part of the planning and implementation of the college’s new science building.
“That’s very exciting,” she said. “I get to talk to the architects and give my input to help them design an ideal space for our department.”
As associate professor of chemistry, Moore also hopes to develop a cultural chemistry class that addresses topics related to food and drugs and plans to establish a summer research program at Monmouth.
Moore is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Society of Biological Inorganic Chemistry, the Council on Undergraduate Research, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi.
