MONMOUTH, Ill. — Monmouth College will host four talks next week, including
three on international subjects. All four events will be held on campus and are
free and open to the public.
On Feb. 5, John H. Starks, Jr. will deliver a lecture entitled “Vox Feminae, Vox
Populi” at 7:30 p.m. in the Morgan Room of Poling Hall. Translated, the title
means “The Woman’s Voice, the People’s Voice,” and it will examine the demand
for actresses in the Roman world.
Starks is a visiting assistant professor at Randolph Macon Woman’s College. The
author of “Latin Laughs: A Production of Plautus’ Poenulus,” he is a graduate of
Washington and Lee College and holds a Ph.D. in classics from the University of
North Carolina.
On Feb. 7, the college will host an International Luncheon at noon, a Great
Decisions forum at 7:30 p.m. and a talk on “GIS and Archaeology,” also at 7:30
p.m.
The latter event will be held in the Morgan Room and will feature MC physics professor Chris Fasano, senior Emily Zvolanek of Lemont, Ill., and Carrie Hritz, a research associate in the
department of anthropology at Washington University.
GIS is a collection of computer hardware, software and geographic data for
capturing, managing, analyzing and displaying all forms of geographically
referenced information. Fasano and Zvolanek will give an overview of what GIS is
and how it works, as well as some simple applications related to archaeology.
Hritz will illustrate ways that GIS is used by archaeologists in the field and
in research.
The weekly Great Decisions forum, which will focus on Mexico, will be held in
the Tartan Room of the Stockdale Center. It will be led by MC faculty members
Shigeko Mato and Leisa Kauffmann.
Earlier in the day, students Dani Briceno, Erin DeFord, Sarah Evans and Leanna
Wilson will recount their experiences abroad in India and France last semester.
A buffet lunch, featuring international foods, is available. A meal ticket may
be purchased for $6.50 in the food service office in Stockdale Center. Lunch
reservations must be made in advance by contacting Leisa Kauffmann at
309-457-2378 or lkauffmann@monm.edu.
