MONMOUTH, Ill. —
Works that range from calm to thunderous will comprise the program for a
special concert of the Monmouth College Percussion Ensemble on May 4 at
7:30 p.m. in the Kasch Performance Hall of the Dahl Chapel and
Auditorium.
Free and open to the public, the hour-long concert will feature an
array of pitched and unpitched percussion instruments, according to Tony
Oliver, director of percussion studies.
Among the selections will be "Norrsken" by Anders Astrand, which
features mallet instruments depicting the Northern Lights; "Amores" by
John Cage, an avant-garde work using a trio of percussionists plus a
piano player; and "Clapping Music" by Steve Reich, which, said Oliver,
is minimalist music featuring subtly changing rhythmic patterns that
have an "almost hypnotic quality and requires great concentration on the
part of the players."
Other featured works will include "Dotty Dimples" by George Hamilton
Green, a ragtime xylophone solo that was a popular genre in the 1920s;
"Quartet for Paper Bags" by Larry Spival; and "Ku-Ka Illimoku" by
Christopher Rouse, a complicated arrangement with numerous instruments
portraying aspects of a Hawaiian war god.
Along with the regular members of the ensemble (Sharon David, Jered
Piepenbrink, Chris Gosda and Bendan Murphy), students from the music
department’s Percussion Techniques class (Matt Henning, Dustin Bennett,
Brian Jordan and Heather West) will join the ensemble to perform on two
pieces.
Oliver said that most students take the class as part of the
education sequence preparing them to teach in public schools. "This
concert should give them good firsthand experience in what it is like to
perform as percussionists," he added.
