MC asks ‘Where are they now?’ and learns about Class of
2006 Release Date:

MONMOUTH, Ill. — For the past few months, Monmouth College has been busy
tracking the first postgraduate steps of approximately 220 members of the Class
of 2006 class. Recently, that data was released, and 100 percent of the
respondents have found employment or are continuing their education.
Michelle Shawgo, director of the college’s Wackerle Career & Leadership Center,
said the tracking process actually begins just prior to commencement at the
Senior Salute event. Soon-to-be-graduates who have already finalized their plans
can complete a survey at that time. In the fall, the remaining members of the
class receive surveys through the mail and, later, are contacted by e-mail or
phone.
The 2006 survey, which was completed by 83 percent of the class, showed that 80
percent had entered the professional work force, while 20 percent were in
graduate or professional school. The leading area of employment was education
(31 percent), followed by business/management (21 percent) and sales and service
(12 percent). Of the 37 students continuing their education, several indicated
they were attending law school or seminary. Other areas of study included
psychology, the sciences, business, college student personnel and
communications.
“It was a pleasant surprise to see an increase in the number of students
attending graduate or professional school,” said Shawgo, who said the figure was
up from 16 percent in last year’s survey.
She added, “Every year, we see more and more different forms of employment. The
occupations are less traditional, and our graduates are branching out into more
areas. It really reinforces what Monmouth College is all about – we are
preparing our students for rich professional lives.”
