IWU professor to present
archaeology lecture at MC Release Date:
October 9, 2008
MONMOUTH, Ill. — Nancy Sultan, professor of classics at
Illinois Wesleyan University, will present the next in a series of archaeology
lectures at Monmouth College on Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Morgan Room in
Poling Hall.
Titled "Should the ‘Elgin Marbles’ Be Returned to Greece?," the talk
is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the MC Classics
Department in cooperation with the Western Illinois Society of the
Archaeological Institute of America (AIA).
"For nearly 2,500 years, the Parthenon has embodied the ancient Greek
ideas of justice, freedom and intellectual and artistic excellence that
marked the height of political power of Athens in the fifth century,"
said Sultan of the temple that is one of the most revered historic
monuments in the world.
Fragments of monumental sculpture from the Parthenon and other
buildings on the Acropolis can be found in museums around the world, but
the largest collection outside Greece
– and the most
hotly debated –
are the so-called "Elgin Marbles," housed in the British Museum in
London.
"For 200 years, the Greeks have been lobbying for their return. The
British Museum acquired them through an Act of Parliament, and it will
take an Act of Parliament to return them," said Sultan, who will provide
her thoughts on where the "Elgin Marbles" should be.
