MC lecture describes bathing styles
of the rich and famous, circa 100 B.C.E.Release Date:

MONMOUTH, Ill. —
Benton Kidd, a curator from the University of Missouri, will deliver the
next in a series of archaeology lectures at Monmouth College on Jan. 31
at 7:30 p.m. in the Morgan Room of Poling Hall.
Sponsored by the Western Illinois Society of the Archaeological
Institute of America (AIA) and the MC Classics Department, the series is
free and open to the public.
Entitled "Reconstructing a Luxury Bath from an Ancient Villa at Tel
Anafa (Israel)," Kidd’s talk will focus on a luxurious villa in the
Upper Galilee region of Israel that was excavated 40 years ago.
"Dating to circa 100 B.C.E., the villa was probably occupied by
Hellenized Phoenicians from nearby Tyre," said Kidd, who is the
associate curator of ancient art at the University of Missouri’s Museum
of Art and Archaeology. "The merchants’ cosmopolitan taste is reflected
in the villa’s most outstanding element, a multi-room bath complex with
walls covered with painted and gilded stucco."
Kidd will examine the color structure of the main bathing room and
present evidence for the chemical components of the pigments and the
techniques for the application of the plaster and gold leaf.
