Galesburg student wins

MONMOUTH, Ill. — J.P. Reed III, a junior from Galesburg, was
awarded Best of Show for a steel and wire sculpture at Monmouth College’s annual
Student Art Exhibition and Competition.
Titled "Addiction is Not Just Your Problem," Reed’s winning piece
shows a young child trying to communicate with an adult who is under the
influence.
The exhibit’s other main prize, the Waltershausen Sculpture Award,
went to Suzanne Barber, a junior from Wyoming. Made of pine needles,
wire and wood, her winning piece is titled "Beauty and Truth."
This year’s competition was judged by Frank Trankina, associate
professor of art at Northern Illinois University. Trankina holds
bachelor’s and master’s degrees from NIU and an MFA degree in painting
and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Six seniors took home first-place honors. Winners included Bonnie
Zanger of Quincy for ceramics, Kristin Long of Aledo for design, Mike
Olson of Carpentersville for drawing, Desiree Swanson of Minooka for
painting, Amanda Luedtke of Woodridge for sculpture and Jessica
Sackville of Aledo for photography.
The student exhibit will be on display through Dec. 10 in the
college’s Len G. Everett Gallery, located in Hewes Library.
