MONMOUTH, Ill. — Monmouth College’s Gamma Pi Chapter of Beta Beta
Beta, the national biology honor society, was presented the Yokley
Outstanding Chapter Activity award for 25 years of continuous membership
registration at the regional Tri-Beta convention last month in
Greenville, Ill.
Monmouth’s Gamma Pi chapter has been in existence for the past 62
years. Nationally, Tri-Beta was founded in 1922 with the purpose of
encouraging scholarly attainment in biology and to honor its members for
superior academic records in the life sciences.
The chapter also held an initiation ceremony recently, welcoming
three new members: Catherine Clarizio, a sophomore from West Dundee;
Sarah Christensen, a junior from Galesburg; and Om Kumar Shrestha, a
sophomore from Nepal.
Tri-Beta’s purposes include cultivating intellectual interest in the
natural sciences, promoting a better appreciation of the value of
biological study and challenging undergraduates to begin research work
and report their findings in Bios, the BBB journal.
