Monmouth College faculty to present chamber recital

Release Date: November 3, 2008

MONMOUTH, Ill. — A unique chamber music recital, featuring the virtuosity of five Monmouth College music faculty, will be presented on Nov. 9 at 3 p.m. in the Kasch Performance Hall of the Dahl Chapel and Auditorium.

The recital, free and open to the public, will combine the talents of Ian Moschenross on piano, Carolyn Suda on cello, Gary Fowler on double bass, David Suda on violin and Steve Richter on clarinet.

The recital will begin with Franz Schubert’s well-known "Trout" Quintet in A major, borrowed from his song of the same name.

A series of works by 20th century Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla, who is famous for his innovations in the traditional Argentine tango, will follow. His works have been arranged by Fowler and include "Kicho," "Verano Porteno" and "Suite del Angel."

Fowler currently teaches double bass, electric bass and guitar at the college, while also serving as a double bassist with the Peoria Symphony and principal double bassist with the Knox-Galesburg Symphony and Peoria Bach Festival.

Moschenross, a sought-after teacher and adjudicator, is a frequent soloist, chamber musician and concerto soloist, having performed in state, regional, national and international venues. He is an active member of the Peoria Area Music Teachers, Illinois Music Teachers and the Music Teachers National Associations.

Carolyn Suda, principal cellist of the Knox-Galesburg Symphony and director of the Monmouth College Chamber Orchestra, is MC’s director of string activities and founder of the Monmouth String Ensemble. She is an active member of the American String Teachers Association and the Suzuki Association of the Americas.

David Suda, along with his wife, Carolyn, and pianist Bruce Polay make up the Knox-Galesburg Trio, a popular chamber music group. He was the concertmaster of the Knox-Galesburg Symphony from 1985 to 2007 and is a frequent chamber music performer.

As the college’s director of instrumental activities, Richter leads The Fighting Scots Marching Band, The Monmouth Winds and The Monmouth Jazz Band. He is the founder of the Camarata Center for the Arts and an active member of the California Orchestra Directors Association, the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, the International Clarinet Society, the Indiana Music Educators Association, the Illinois Music Educators Association and MENC.
