MONMOUTH, Ill. —Monmouth College will once again host College For
Kids (CFK) this summer, and some changes are in store for the popular
student enrichment program.
Previously open to students who had recently completed grades four
through eight, the annual summer program, which this year runs June
9-20, is now open to second- and third-graders, too.
Also new this year, said CFK director Kathy Mainz, is a summer
musical theater camp, "On Broadway!" The three-week day camp, which
derives its name from the college’s street address, will overlap with
College For Kids and runs June 9-27.
"The camp will explore musical theater production in four areas
–
singing, dancing, acting and technical theater," explained Mainz, who
said the camp is open to fifth- through 10th-grade students. "Students
will work directly with Monmouth College faculty to perform ‘Annie Jr.’"
College For Kids participants take three classes, choosing from
selections in such areas as theater, science, art, writing, math,
foreign languages and history. The classes begin at 9, 10 and 11 a.m.,
and students move on their own from building to building and classroom
to classroom. In lieu of final exams, the last day of class is reserved
for project-ending activities. Some of the course titles this year are
"Are You Smarter Than a 2nd or 3rd Grader?" and "Want to Be a
Millionaire?"
While College For Kids is a morning program, the musical theater camp
will run from noon to 5 p.m. for its first two weeks and from 9 a.m. to
5 p.m. the final week. Performances of "Annie Jr." are scheduled for
June 27-28.
Another new development, said Mainz, is a change in the requirements
for entrance into the CFK program. Students now need to meet ONE of the
following criteria: currently enrolled in a gifted/talented or
enrichment program; scored at 85th percentile or better on standardized
tests; scored at least 115 on cognitive abilities test; submission of a
portfolio of six fine arts works for assessment; or enrolled in CFK last
year. Additionally, said Mainz, a student will be accepted if a parent
or teacher fills out a gifted characteristics matrix and the student
receives a sufficient score.

theater camp, contact Mainz at 309-457-2361. Information about both
programs should also be available this week through the local schools.
