MONMOUTH, Ill. — The Monmouth College Chamber Orchestra and
Monmouth Winds will present a concert on April 13 at 2:30 p.m. in the Kasch
Performance Hall of the Dahl Chapel and Auditorium.
Free and open to the public, the concert will feature the chamber
orchestra, under the baton of strings program director Carolyn Suda,
performing two major works with the Monmouth Winds, conducted by Stephen
Richter, director of instrumental activities.
One of the major pieces on the program, "Meditation from Thais" by
Jules Massenet, will feature violin soloist Elena Reshetova, a junior
from Moscow who serves as the chamber orchestra’s concertmaster.
According to Suda, Reshetova originally came to MC as an exchange
student and then later decided to complete her studies at the college.
"We are thrilled she has decided to stay and graduate from Monmouth
College," Suda said. "Not only is she a wonderful violinist, but she has
added a dimension to our string orchestra which allows us to play more
difficult music."
The strings and winds will also combine to perform Schubert’s
"Symphony No. 5 in B flat Major."
The chamber orchestra will then perform the finale from Tchaikovsky’s
"Serenade for Strings," which Suda said is an "impassioned work" that
exemplifies the composer’s "beautiful melodic gift and energy."
In addition, the strings will play two of Dvorak’s "Slavonic Dances,"
along with what Suda described as a "fun, driving fiddle tune" called "Styres’
Rally" by Alexander Safford.
