Gresens to consider ‘who owns
the past’ at MC archaeology lecture
Release Date:
November 4, 2008
MONMOUTH, Ill. — Former Monmouth College faculty member Nicholas
Gresens, now a Ph.D. candidate at Indiana University, will present the
next in a series of archaeology lectures at the college on Nov. 10 at
7:30 p.m. in the Morgan Room in Poling Hall.
Titled "Who Owns the Past? Identity and the Practice of Archaeology,"
the talk is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the MC
Classics Department in cooperation with the Western Illinois Society of
the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA).
Gresens said the question he’ll be discussing is not merely an
academic one, but has also led to serious conflict, and not just in
Indiana Jones movies.
"Not only are we dealing with a question of who owns the past, but
who gets to discover and own the objects from the past," said Gresens.
"That’s a question which may seem simple on the surface, but it is full
of complicated and complicating factors."
