MONMOUTH, Ill. — Six students were recently inducted into Monmouth College’s chapter of the political science honor society, Pi Sigma Alpha. The ceremony marked the organization’s return to Monmouth after a four-year hiatus.
Inducted were seniors Katherine Davis of Avon, Kathryn Fitzsimmons of Galesburg and Benjamin Sauer of Elgin, and juniors Bill R. French of Oak Park, April Miller of Oneida and Edward Miller of Mokena.
For membership into the society, which promotes the study of political science in undergraduate institutions and recognizes students for excellence in the field, students must be at least juniors who have completed 10 semester-credits of work in political science. That must include at least one upper-division course, with students maintaining an average grade of “B” or higher in the political science courses. All members must also be in the top third of their class.
“Our re-energized Alpha Alpha Iota chapter will be working hard this year to cultivate free and open discourse regarding political issues on campus by publishing articles that discuss controversial issues and by co-sponsoring activities through the Monmouth College Political Action Committee (MCPAC),” said faculty member Tobias Gibson, the chapter’s adviser.
To broaden its impact, Pi Sigma Alpha has become a member MCPAC, an umbrella organization encompassing the political, cultural and social groups on campus. As an MCPAC member, Pi Sigma Alpha will co-sponsor bi-weekly movie showings at the Peterson Hall Theater. The chapter is also planning larger events in conjunction with MCPAC, including a panel discussion next fall on abortion in America.
