MONMOUTH, Ill. — Several Monmouth College pre-law students
traveled to Drake University earlier this month to hear a speech by U.S. Supreme
Court Chief Justice John Roberts. The students were accompanied by assistant
professor of political science Tobias Gibson, who organized the trip for them to
visit a first-class law school and hear Roberts deliver the 11th Annual Dwight
D. Opperman Lecture in Constitutional Law before a crowd of approximately 2,500.
Roberts, who was appointed to the Supreme Court three years ago by
President George W. Bush, traced the history of technology’s role in the
law from the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans to the present. He
noted that today’s powerful computer-based legal research tools have
made it much easier for lawyers to find the information they need. He
also cautioned that the tools can be misused and that they can’t take
the place of critical thinking.
"His speech was important because he stressed the importance of law’s
history and how it has helped shape the current way law is practiced and
researched," said Olivia Leonard, a sophomore from Naperville.
"He was actually much funnier than I expected, which seems an odd
thing to talk about, but it’s what really stood out to me during his
speech," said Alex Roling, a sophomore from Holy Cross, Iowa. "It was
something I was not expecting in the least."
Leonard said that the trip allowed her to collect useful information.
"The reason I went on this trip was to tour Drake Law School to help
decide if it may be a possible consideration for me," she said. "I liked
the fact that they have won many awards and have such a high success
rate of job placement within nine months of graduation. I was also
impressed with the fact that they are ranked second in the country,
right behind Yale, for ‘Best in Practical Training.’"
Sophomore Jennifer Hess of Glenview also enjoyed Drake Law School,
and she said it had a familiar feel.
"It reminded me of Monmouth College because of how nice the campus
is, and how current students say that the professors are helpful and
know the students’ names."
"It made me even more excited to go to law school," concluded
Stephanie Arrowsmith, a junior from Trivoli.
Gibson has made it a point to encourage talented Monmouth College
students to consider law school as an option. In addition to offering
students a possible glimpse into their future, he said the trip will
also benefit them in the present.
"While Monmouth is very lucky to have a great group of pre-law
students, hearing a speech from Chief Justice Roberts and visiting Drake
Law School is the type of interactive learning experience that energizes
students to focus on their studies."
