MC’s Scots Day activities to include Honors Convo, Women’s Day concert
Release Date:
April 15, 2008
MONMOUTH, Ill. — Monmouth College will observe the 155th
anniversary of its founding and the arrival of spring on April 22 with "Scots
Day," a day of no classes which features several student activities, including
the annual Honors Convocation in the Dahl Chapel and Auditorium.
April 22 also marks two other celebrations. Besides being Earth Day,
it is also "Women’s Day at MC," and a concert that is free and open to
the public will be the final event of a busy day on campus.
The busy slate of activities actually begin on April 21, when several
musical acts, including the Scotsmen and the Monmouth College Pipe Band,
will perform from 8 to 10 p.m. on Dunlap Terrace.
The Honors Convocation, which formally recognizes the scholastic
achievements of Monmouth students over the past year, will begin at 11
a.m. The public is invited.
In addition to the presentation of departmental awards and prizes,
the Blue Key and Mortar Board honor societies will recognize a freshman
and senior man and woman of the year. Also recognized will be
scholarship recipients and donors, as well as outstanding faculty
members. The Monmouth College Chorale, directed by Sarah Graham, will
perform college songs.
From noon to 4 p.m., a variety of games will be played in the Quad,
including sumo wrestling and human bowling.
At 7 p.m. in the Whiteman-McMillan Highlander Room of the college’s
Stockdale Center, singer/songwriter Judy Gorman will give a Women’s Day
concert titled "Let’s Celebrate: The Rising of Us All."
Gorman, who has performed with such artists as Pete Seeger and the
Indigo Girls, is a frequent performer at festivals and universities
throughout the United States and Europe, and she has also performed at
the United Nations. She has just released "The Rising of Us All," a CD
of "songs of peace and justice, women and work, struggle and
celebration." It follows her previous CD, "Analog Girl in the Digital
World."
The works on her current CD are described as "passionate, bluesy
vocals and energizing songs with the vision that another world is
possible."
Gorman will conduct a Q&A session following the concert.
