How Do I Prepare For SOAR?
Start thinking about what is important to you and your academic
career. Prior to SOAR, you will be asked to complete a
questionnaire that focuses on your academic interests, strengths, and
other pertinent information that will be shared with your academic
advisor prior to your arrival at SOAR. Why do I need to attend SOAR?
The Summer Orientation, Advisement and Registration program is intended for incoming students to get a head start on
registering for classes and becoming more acquainted with the college
surroundings prior to arriving on campus for the school year. You
will have the opportunity to meet members of your class and meet
current students who will help show you around the campus.
What do I need to know to register
for classes?
In order to help you get started on planning your first semester, we
will be choosing one or more courses that are especially appropriate for
you, based on the information you have shared with the admission office.
At SOAR, you and your faculty advisor will have the opportunity to
discuss these recommendations, as well as other courses that interest
you. Together, you and your advisor will decide on the right
combination for courses to help you have a successful first semester.
If you are a
transfer student, your academic advisor will already have had the
opportunity to review your transcript evaluation prior to SOAR and will assist you in
registering for the classes you need to graduate in your major field.
What if I haven't decided on a
major?
That is OK! The academic
advisors will be able to help you get on the right track to by
suggesting courses that are tailored to your interests, needs and
background.
Will I be able to meet my roommate
when I come to SOAR?
While we cannot guarantee that you will meet your
roommate at this visit to the campus, we will give you a list of
people attending the program and will try our best to introduce the two
of you if you both attend the same SOAR program.
Will I be required to take a foreign
language placement exam?
Yes, in order to fulfill the foreign
language requirement in the Monmouth College curriculum, one must be
able to pass a 102 level college course of a foreign language. You
will be asked to take a web-based computer placement test. The
test is administered by foreign language professors.
If you have never taken a foreign language, you
are exempt from this exam, but must complete the foreign language
requirement (proficiency at the 102 level) prior to graduation.
Will there be an opportunity for me
to discuss my Financial Aid packet?
Yes, there will be representatives from
the Office of Financial Aid at SOAR all day to answer your questions
regarding your financial aid package, payment options, insurance and
much more.
Is there anything I need to bring?
If you haven't already returned the
following forms, please bring them with you when you
come:
Also, if you qualify for a work-study
position in the fall, we encourage you to complete the necessary
paperwork at the SOAR program. In order to complete the
necessary forms, you must provide two forms of identification. It
is suggested that you bring your
1) original social security card
(copies and faxes are not acceptable) and,
2) a driver's license or state-issued
ID, or
3) a certified copy of your birth
certificate.
You will also have the opportunity to go
into a residence hall and measure the rooms for more precise
dimensions. If you wish to bring a measuring tape, we recommend
it, as well as any questions you might have. |
