The following questions are designed to help you and your advisor pick the best set of courses for you for your first semester at Monmouth. By describing some of your hopes and experiences, you will help your advisor understand your needs and interests. There are no right or wrong, good or bad answers to any of these questions. What you share here will help start a conversation with your SOAR faculty advisor.
1. What are some areas of interest you want to explore at Monmouth? For example, are there majors you are interested in? Career areas you are thinking about? Areas other people think you have talent for? What do YOU want to explore? Pick the top three things you want to explore and list them here:
2. Based on what you know at this point in your life about your interests and gifts, what do you think you might major in? On a scale from 1-10, how confident are you that this is what you will choose as a major?
3. Tell us about your reading and writing experiences. For example, how much do you enjoy reading? How well do you think you read? How much reading do you do? And, how well do you think you write? How easy or hard is paper writing for you?
4. What foreign language did you take in high school? How easy or hard is foreign language for you? Would you consider taking a different language in college?
5. In general, what subjects or types of classes do you do best in? What subjects or types of classes are hardest for you?
6. What are you most excited about when you think about being a student at Monmouth? (It’s OK to say you are excited about meeting new people, playing in the band, or being away from home. But, also tell us about what excites you about college classes. What are you looking forward to the most?)
7. What are you most concerned about? (Again, there are no right or wrong answers here. But, if you let us know what concerns you have, we can help you address them.)
8. What one thing would you most like your SOAR faculty advisor to know about you?
9. Have you taken any dual credit courses or are you taking any now? If so, please list them here. Also, be sure to arrange for an official college transcript that shows those courses to be sent to the Office of Admission when you complete the courses.
10. Please list any AP course work that you have completed or are in the process of completing (along with the test scores, if known). Official AP scores should be sent to the Office of the Registrar at Monmouth College.
11. If you plan to take any courses this summer at your local community college, please list the courses, below.
