Monmouth College 2003 Baseball - Results and Game Summaries
May 9 at
MWC Tournament,
Fond du Lac, WI
St. Norbert 8, Monmouth 6
Knox 10, Monmouth 9 (17-17)
There will be a new champion in the Midwest Conference after the
Fighting Scots were eliminated on Day One of the MWC Championships. St.
Norbert rocked starter Toby Lannholm in the first contest of
the day, scoring seven runs on 11 hits. A three-run sixth spelled doom for the Scots, who committed six
errors in the game. Beau Hellman picked up a pair of hits and
Jeremy Hamilton, who smacked a solo homer in the second, drove
in three runs. Hellman got the nod in the loser's bracket game vs. Knox.
Monmouth led 9-6 going into the bottom of the ninth when the Prairie Fire
erupted for four runs to knock the Scots out of the tournament. The Scots rocked four Knox pitchers for 15 hits, but couldn't douse
the Fire in the final frame. Hellman and freshmen Jason Salmon and
Josh Ragar collected three hits each. Ragar drove in four runs on a
three-run second inning homer and a solo shot in the
eighth. Hellman drove in three, two coming on a homer in the top of the
ninth to give the Scots a three-run cushion.
May 3 at
Grinnell College,
Grinnell, IA
Monmouth 3, Grinnell 0
Grinnell 6, Monmouth 2 (17-15, 10-2)
With nothing on the line in terms of team accomplishments, individual
performances stood out for the Fighting Scots in their regular season
finale. In the opener, Toby Lannholm's conference ERA remained at
0.00 with a seven-inning complete game shutout. He allowed just four hits
and a walk while fanning four. Despite Lannholm's dominance, Monmouth
still found itself in a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth, but
Jason Salmon singled and came in to score after three walks. MC got
some insurance in the seventh as Salmon singled again and scored on
Nathan Clark's ground out. Beau Hellman also had an RBI single
in the rally. Salmon, who finished the twinbill with four hits, raised his
average to .452. In the nightcap, Hellman dominated for five innings,
surrendering just two hits and facing just one batter over the minimum.
Coach Roger Sander gave Steve Myros the ball in the bottom
of the sixth, and Grinnell rallied to tie the score in that frame and go
ahead to stay in the seventh. Matt Gordon supplied the MC offense
with a two-run homer. Lannholm and Hellman now sport 1.18 and 1.24 ERAs,
respectively.
April 29 at Western
Illinois University,
Macomb, IL
WIU 3, Monmouth 1 (16-14)
In a game that did not originally appear on the schedule, the Fighting
Scots got several pitchers some action against a quality opponent and
Jason Salmon proved he can flat-out hit, no matter what the
opposition. Salmon was 2-for-4 to improve on his .455 season average,
and Mason Abner, Lukas Atkins, Adam Carlson, Jeff Zurawicz, Pat Schramm and
Kevin Meinhart all pitched at least an inning of the nine-inning game.
MC's lone run came on Beau Hellman's sacrifice fly. It plated
Salmon, who had doubled to lead off the game. WIU tied the game in the
bottom of the first against Abner and took the lead to stay off Atkins.
April 26 at Knox College,
Galesburg, IL
Monmouth 10, Knox 0
Monmouth 4, Knox 1 (16-13, 9-1)
Monmouth set the tone for the day early, giving opening game starter Steven
Myros a five-run cushion to work with after the first inning. Myros went the distance, scattering seven
hits and collecting his second win against no losses. Beau Hellman's
three hits and four RBI led the way in the opener while Josh Hall
drove in a pair of runs and Thad King and Nathan Clark
collected two hits each. Hellman then starred on the mound in the
nightcap, pitching nine innings and striking out 14 batters while
surrendering four hits and one earned run. Tristan Reimolds drove
in a pair of runs with a double in the second to give Hellman the only
runs he would need to notch his team-leading sixth win of the year.
April 24 vs. Illinois College,
Monmouth IL
Monmouth 17, Illinois C. 13
Monmouth 16, Illinois C. 0 (14-13, 7-1)
Illinois College jumped out to a 6-0 lead in its first at-bat of the
opener, but after that, it was all Monmouth, as the Fighting Scots scored
33 runs in the next 11 innings, batting a combined .492 (30-for-61). While
there were plenty of heroes offensively, two pitchers came up big,
starting with John Scudella, who came on in relief in the second
inning of first game with runners on second and third and IC ahead 7-4. He
stranded both runners and went on to pitch six innings of relief, allowing
just three earned runs. In the nightcap, Toby Lannholm dominated,
pitching a complete-game, six-inning shutout. He allowed just three hits
and a walk. The biggest blow offensively was struck by Jeremy Hamilton,
who broke an 11-11 tie in the fifth inning with a grand slam homer.
Hamilton finished the twinbill 3-for-4 with seven RBI. Jason Salmon
and Thad King, Monmouth's two .400 hitters, were at it again, as
Salmon went 5-for-6 with six runs and King as 4-for-8 with six RBI,
including a long two-run homer. Catcher Josh Hall homered in the
first game and the team's other backstop, Josh Ragar, was 2-for-4
with two RBI in the nightcap. Beau Hellman was a combined 4-for-7
with three RBI and Matt Gordon played in the nightcap and belted a
double and a triple.
April 19 vs. Knox College,
Monmouth IL
Knox 15, Monmouth 6, 8 innings
Monmouth 11, Knox 4 (12-13, 5-1)
The Fighting Scots needed one victory in their doubleheader with the
Prairie Fire to keep the upper hand in the MWC South, and they got it in
the nightcap thanks to a strong outing from Beau Hellman, who
improved to 5-0 on the year. After a first-inning walk, the senior set
down 13 straight Knox hitters, and although he yielded a pair of homers in
the seventh inning, he still had plenty left in the tank in the eighth and ninth
frames, recording the last five outs of his complete game by strikeout. Hellman, who was also 3-for-5 at the plate with a run and a run scored in
the nightcap, nearly lifted the Scots to victory in the opener, as his
bases-loaded double rallied MC from a 6-3 deficit entering the bottom of
the seventh and final inning. Although Hellman represented the winning run
at second with nobody out, his teammates couldn't drive him in, and
Monmouth then committed three errors in extra innings that led to nine
unearned runs. Besides Hellman's heroics, another story of the day was the
long ball. Both teams took advantage of a rare southerly wind to send
balls flying out of the park, including several to straightaway center.
Knox had six roundtrippers on the day and the Scots slugged four.
Jeremy Hamilton and Ricky Barnett each homered in the nightcap
and Alan Betourne belted a longball in both games. His three-run
shot in the bottom of the first staked Hellman to a big lead. Betourne
finished the day 5-for-9 with five RBIs, Jason Salmon was 4-for-9
and Barnett was 3-for-3.
April 14 at Illinois
Wesleyan University, Bloomington, IL
IWU 3,
Monmouth 2, 8 innings
IWU 6, Monmouth 4 (11-12)
Missed opportunities was the name of the game for the Scots in their
make-up action against the Titans. In the opener, Jason Salmon's
two-run single staked MC to a 2-1 lead in the third inning, but the hosts
tied the game against starter Toby Lannholm. A double by Jeremy
Pryzbylo and a single by Tristan Reimolds put MC runners on
first and third with no outs and the top of the order coming up in extra
innings, but the Scots failed to score, and Brian McCabe homered on
Lannholm's first pitch in the bottom of the eighth to end the game. In
the nightcap, the Scots outhit IWU 14-5, including an early two-run double
by Pryzbylo. But the Titans scored three unearned runs off MC's Pat
Schramm to steal away the second end of the twinbill as well. Thad
King and Jeremy Hamilton both had four hits on the day for
Monmouth.
April 12 at Illinois
College, Jacksonville, IL
Monmouth 9, Illinois C. 3
Monmouth 13, Illinois C. 2 (11-10, 4-0)
The Fighting Scots' formula in the MWC is as easy as A-B-C. For the
second straight conference doubleheader, Adam and Beau & Co. combined for
a sweep, putting the Scots in the driver's seat in the South Division
race. Adam Carlson pitched the first game, allowing three earned
runs in 6.1 innings to improve to 3-2, and Beau Hellman
remained perfect at 4-0 in the nightcap, pitching a seven-inning complete
game. He yielded two earned runs and struck out eight as the Scots won
what was scheduled to be a nine-inning contest by the 10-run rule. Both
pitchers had plenty of offensive support, as Jason Salmon and
Thad King both 5-for-8 on the day. In the opener, Nathan Clark
had the hot bat, going 4-for-4 with five RBIs, a home run and a double. In
the nightcap, coach Roger Sander's gut instinct paid off once
again, as Ricky Barnett, starting for the first time in his career,
drove in four runs, including three on one of the Scots' four homers on
the day. The other long balls were hit by Jeremy Hamilton, who had
five RBIs in the twinbill, and Jeremy Pryzbylo. A week ago, Carlson
and Hellman combined to blank Grinnell in a 3-0, 5-0 conference-opening
sweep. Hellman's ERA is now 0.75 this year, while Salmon and King are
batting .453 and .438, respectively.
April 5 vs. Grinnell
College, Monmouth, IL
Monmouth 3, Grinnell 0
Monmouth 5, Grinnell 0 (9-10, 2-0)
The Fighting Scots' second season started in fine fashion, with a
strong outing by Adam Carlson followed by a masterpiece by Beau
Hellman in the nightcap. In getting off to a 2-0 start in the MWC, the
back-to-back shutouts began with Carlson scattering seven hits. Monmouth
broke a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the fifth on Jason Salmon's clutch
two-out single and, in the next frame, Alan Betourne tripled in a
run and scored on Jeremy Pryzbylo's hit. Hellman showed he meant
business in game two by fanning the first two Pioneers he faced, and he
really hit a groove after allowing a leadoff single in the third. The
senior sat down the next 16 batters, and he finished with a sterling
two-hit, nine-inning shutout, allowing just four baserunners.
Additionally, his two-run single in the bottom of the fourth put the Scots
on the board, and Salmon and Tristan Reimolds added RBIs. Hellman
is now 3-0 on the year with a microscopic 0.43 ERA.
March 25 vs. Augustana
College, Monmouth, IL
Augustana 4,
Monmouth 2
Augustana 6, Monmouth 5 (7-10)
The Fighting Scots were left with a hollow feeling after two comeback
efforts fell short against the Vikings. In the opener, Monmouth trailed
1-0 for half the game, but tied the score on Jeremy Pryzbylo's RBI
single in the fourth. However, an error on a potential double play
grounder opened the door for three Augustana runs in the top of the fifth.
In the nightcap, the Scots trailed 5-0, but they managed to tie the game
at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Jason Salmon
and sacrifice flies by Nathan Clark and Jeremy Hamilton. The
Vikings went ahead in the top of the sixth and the Scots could not re-tie
the game despite a leadoff double by Josh Ragar in the bottom of
the frame. Teddy Grothe, who has not allowed an earned run in 14
appearances, got both saves for the Vikings. Salmon led Monmouth with
three hits on the day.
March 23 vs. Wisconsin
Lutheran, Monmouth, IL
Monmouth 6, Wisconsin Lutheran 3 (7-8)
For the third time in their three-game series against WLC, the Scots
jumped out to an early lead, but in the series finale, the Warriors did
post a reply. Monmouth led 4-0 after one inning, as Jeremy Hamilton
contributed a two-out, two-run single. Alan Betourne followed with
a triple, and he scored on Josh Hall's single. MC starter Toby
Lannholm left after throwing five innings of one-run ball, and
reliever Steve Myros, though very effective with six strikeouts in
three frames, did surrender a two-run homer in the sixth to make things
interesting. But the Scots got an insurance run on Chris Musielak's
sacrifice fly in the seventh, and Pat Schramm retired the side in
order in the ninth to collect the save. Jason Salmon and Hamilton
each had three hits. Salmon went 6-for-13 in the series.
March 22 vs. Wisconsin
Lutheran, Monmouth, IL
Monmouth 9, Wisconsin Lutheran 1
Monmouth 13, Wisconsin Lutheran 1 (6-8)
The Fighting Scots are back in Illinois and back to their winning
ways, convincingly sweeping a doubleheader to stop a five-game losing
streak. Monmouth was solid on the mound and at the plate in both games.
Starters Adam Carlson and Beau Hellman each had shutouts
going through five innings. Carlson stayed in to finish the opener,
yielding an unearned run in the seventh, and Hellman, who allowed just one
hit, gave way to John Scudella, who pitched the final frames of the
nightcap. The offensive tone was set right off the bat by Jeremy
Hamilton's three-run double in the first frame of the opener. Hamilton
finished the day 2-for-5 with five RBIs, but the biggest star was Thad
King, who went 5-for-5 and scored four runs. King is now hitting .513
this season, while Hellman lowered his ERA to 0.58 and raised his record
to 2-0. Other MC players with multiple hits on the day were Hellman,
Alan Betourne, Jeremy Pryzbylo and Jason Salmon with
three apiece and Steve Turner and Josh Ragar with two each.
For the day, the Scots had 29 hits.
March 14 at Ft. Myers, FL
Wittenberg 15, Monmouth 3
Benedictine 5,
Monmouth 2 (4-8)
The Fighting Scots' Florida swing ended on a disappointing note, as
they lost their final five games. The loss string hit four when MC starter
Mason Abner failed to retire a batter in the top of the first
against Wittenberg. The Ohio school also knocked around reliever Pat
Schramm. Jason Salmon had two hits for the Scots and Nathan
Clark homered. In the Benedictine game, the Scots got a much better
pitching performance from Kevin Meinhart, but three unearned runs
proved to be the difference. Beau Hellman was 3-for-3. Thad King
finished the trip hitting .441, with Salmon right behind at .436.
March 13 at Ft. Myers, FL
Muskingum 7, Monmouth 6, 9 inn.
Muskingum 10,
Monmouth 4 (4-6)
For the first game date this season, the Scots didn't experience a
win, being swept by Muskingum. The opener was a real battle, as the Scots
rallied from an early 4-0 deficit and went ahead in extra innings on
Jason Salmon's clutch two-out single. But MC starter Adam Carlson,
who pitched brilliantly after yielding the four early runs, allowed a
two-out, two-run walkoff homer in the bottom of the ninth. Salmon,
Nathan Clark, Josh Hall and Alan Betourne all had two
hits apiece for Monmouth. In the nightcap, the Scots played poorly
in the field, committing eight errors, which led to five unearned runs off
starter Toby Lannholm. Thad King had a two-run double and
Salmon, who finished the day 4-for-7, added an RBI double.
March 11 at Ft. Myers, FL
Monmouth 11, Wabash 10
Wabash 5,
Monmouth 1 (4-4)
The splits just keep on coming for the Fighting Scots, who went one up
and one down against Wabash. In the opener, Jason Salmon,
Tristan Reimolds and Jeremy Pryzbylo led MC's 14-hit attack
with three hits apiece, and the Scots rallied from a 10-6 deficit in the
bottom of the seventh to win. Pryzbylo's RBI single started the rally and
Salmon had a two-run triple. Jeremy Hamilton then singled to tie
the contest at 10-10, and he scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch.
Matt Engelhardt earned the win in relief. In the nightcap, Thad
King had two of the Scots' four hits. John Scudella received
the decision, allowing three earned runs in four innings.
March 10 at Ft. Myers, FL
William Penn 2,
Monmouth 0
Monmouth 2, Carroll 1 (3-3)
It was another day, another split for the Fighting Scots, who were
involved in a pair of pitching duels. In the opener, the Scots managed
just four hits, spoiling a terrific college debut by Pat Schramm,
who held WPU to two runs on five hits while going the distance. Beau
Hellman got the win in the nightcap, yielding an earned run while
throwing a complete-game seven-hitter. Thad King was the offensive
star, going 3-for-3 with a double. He scored the go-ahead run in the top
of the fifth on Jason Riney's double.
March 9 at Ft. Myers, FL
Monmouth 17, St. Joseph's 10
Wilmington 4,
Monmouth 3 (2-2)
Jeremy Pryzbylo's grand slam home run during a nine-run fourth inning
highlighted a Fighting Scot comeback in their first game, but they could
have used a few of their 17 runs in the nightcap against Wilmington.
Jason Salmon had a two-run single in the fourth and Jeremy Hamilton,
who batted twice in the frame, had an RBI in each at-bat as Monmouth
rallied from a 9-6 deficit. Salmon, Beau Hellman and Hamilton each
finished with three hits and Thad King and Tristan Reimolds
had two apiece. The winner was Steve Myros, who pitched 5.1 innings
of relief and yielded three runs. Kevin Meinhart pitched well in
his first collegiate start against Wilmington, surrendering four runs in
6.1 innings, but he suffered the defeat. Steve Turner had two hits
and Hamilton drove in two runs.
March 8 at Ft. Myers, FL
Clarke 5, Monmouth 4
Monmouth 3, New Jersey City 0 (1-1)
Despite a two-run homer by Beau Hellman, the Fighting Scots
failed to win their 2003 season opener in Florida, but Toby Lannholm
helped Monmouth salvage a split for the day by shutting down NJCU on just
two hits. The hard-throwining right-hander went the distance, striking out
three. Run support came from Thad King, Tristan Reimolds and
Jason Salmon, who all had RBIs. Salmon was 2-for-4 in the opener,
and Nate Clark and Jeremy Pryzbylo added RBIs. The loss went
to Adam Carlson, who allowed four earned run in 5.1 innings. He
gave up six hits and three walks while striking out four. Steve Myros
pitched 1.2 innings of relief.
