Monmouth caught fire in the first half, connecting on nearly 60
percent of their shots in a 71-60 win over Lake Forest. The Scots went

layup for five of his 11 points. Lake Forest climbed back to within
single digits midway through the second half, but the Scots kept them
from getting closer than nine points. Corey Gruber and Alex
Tanney each went 2-for-2 from the line in the final minute to hold
off the Foresters. Kyle Weyeneth led the Scots with 13 points,
Curtis Oler and Cory Bishop added 11 each.

Trailing most of the game, the Scots battled back and took their final
lead of the game at the 2:20 mark when Alex Tanney took a dish
from Kyle Weyeneth to put Monmouth up 72-71. It became a battle
of free throws in the final minute - Ripon hitting five of six and
Monmouth connecting on four of their six attempts. The Scots' final free
throw was waved off for a lane violation, giving Ripon their chance for
the last second win. Robbie Hinkle hit four treys to lead five
Scots in double figures with 18. Zach Ott hit 10-of-12 free
throws for 15 points, Tanney added 12, Eric Grant and Eric

half, the Fighting Scots held the Green Knights scoreless for the first
eight minutes of the second half, taking a 39-38 lead on Corey Gruber's
jumper with 12:16 remaining. St. Norbert retook the lead at the eight
minute mark, but the Scots answered and regained the lead for good when

Hinkle's 3-pointer three minutes later gave the Scots their first

the lead until a Zach Ott free throw with 1:18 left gave Monmouth
the lead for good. Eric Cogdill iced the game going 4-for-4 from
the line in the final 48 seconds. Tanney led with a game-high 21 points
and Cogdill recorded a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds - all

Knox 70, Monmouth 65 (5-12, 2-8)
Monmouth went cold in the final 3:38 in a 70-65 loss to Knox. The
Scots had built a double-digit lead in the first half, but cold shooting
in the second half allowed the Prairie Fire to pick up the win. A pair
of Matt Goedeke free throws gave Knox a 61-60 lead with 3:55 left.
Eric Grant answered on the next possession, nailing a 3-pointer to
give the Scots their last field goal and lead of the night. A pair of
Fire baskets in the lane and a free throw in the last :24 held off the
Scots despite four scoring in double digits. Eric Cogdill made
6-of-7 field goals to lead Monmouth with 13 points, Zach Ott
added 12, Kyle Weyeneth chipped in with 11 and Grant rounded out

and constructed a 10-0 run near the end of the first 20 minutes en route
to a 75 point first half. Monmouth played nearly even with Grinnell in

After a see-saw battle through the first 11 minutes, Monmouth took the
lead for good on Kyle Weyeneth's layup. A 3-pointer by Corey
Gruber with three minutes left in the first half gave the Scots a
10-point cushion. The second half was more of the same. Quinn Wilkin's
bucket staked the Scots to their biggest lead of the night - 29 points
at 70-41. Gruber led the Scots with 18 points, going 6-for-7 from the
field including 3-for-3 on threes. He also dished out a team-high six

Carroll 79, Monmouth 66 (4-9, 1-5)
Monmouth wasn't expecting Carroll to have an advantage at the free
throw line in Glennie Gym, but that's what happened in the Fighting
Scots' 79-66 loss to the Pioneers. Carroll took 30 trips to the charity
stripe on Monmouth's home court to just seven for the Scots. Carroll's
86 percent free throw shooting offset the Scots 50 percent field goal
efficiency and kept the Pioneers unbeaten in league play. The Scots kept
it close most of the way, trailing 39-30 at the half. Corey Gruber
drained a 3-pointer to open the second half scoring barrage. Eric
Grant, Alex Tanney and Kyle Weyeneth then connected on
shots in the paint on consecutive trips before Zach Ott's bucket
in the lane trimmed the deficit to 42-41 just four minutes into the
second half. The Scots tied it on a Quinn Wilkin trey just
minutes later, but couldn't quite take the lead as the Pioneers hit 11
of 13 free throws in the final 5:15. Ott and Corey Turner led the

on a Corey Turner basket. Turner had the lone hot hand for the
Scots, draining 7 of his 9 shots to finish with 18 points.
Jan. 13, 2009 vs. Knox College at Galesburg, Ill
Monmouth 52 (4-7, 1-3), Knox 46
No offensive records were set in a low-scoring 52-46 Monmouth win at
Knox. On a night when neither team shot better than 30 percent from the
floor, the Fighting Scots were the proverbial last man standing.
Trailing 23-19 at halftime, the Scots took the lead for good when
Eric Cogdill's fourth consecutive basket at the 14:24 mark gave
Monmouth a 32-28 advantage. Knox trimmed the deficit to three 44-41 with
2:52 left to play, but the Scots closed out the game on an 8-4 run to
pick up their first Midwest Conference win. Cogdill's 13 points led the
Monmouth scoring.
Jan. 7, 2009 vs. Illinois College at Monmouth, Ill

period to down the Scots 72-86. The Blue Boys lit it up from beyond the
arc, hitting nearly 60 percent of their treys. The Scots trailed by as
many as 18 points late in the first half, but a Zach Ott bucket
and an Alex Tanney 3-pointer in the last 1:34 of the half trimmed
the hole to seven, 42-35. Monmouth came out firing in the second half
and tied the game on Eric Cogdill's jumper less than three
minutes into the second session. The Blue Boys regained the lead on

they wanted going in a 78-62 loss at Central. The Dutch took a 36-22
halftime lead and maintained the edge over the last 20 minutes. Zach
Ott paced Monmouth with 13 points and Kyle Weyeneth pulled
down a team-high six rebounds, but the Scots experienced shooting
problems, hitting just 31 percent of their field goals and only three of
their 17 three-point tries. Central was hot on their own court,
connecting on more than half their shots to hand the Scots a loss in

regulation at Ripon. The Red Hawks took advantage to stage a
come-from-behind 79-71 win in overtime. The Scots, who led 35-23 at the
half, missed all four of their free throw attempts in the final 2:38 as
Ripon staged a furious rally to force overtime and then scored the first
eight points of the extra session. The loss overshadowed the debut of
Alex Tanney and Kyle Weyeneth who joined the team after
finishing the football season with an 11-1 record and reaching the
second round of the playoffs. Tanney had a team-high 17 points and
Weyeneth 10. Eric Cogdill added 14 points and Robbie Hinkle
11.

Scots answered and went up by nine with a minute to go on Corey
Turner's three-pointer with an assist from Ubbenga. Monmouth was

University in the championship game of the Case Alumni Association Rough
Rider Tournament. The Scots trailed by double digits midway through the
first half but battled back and pulled within five on a Corey Gruber
three-pointer, but couldn't quite get over the hump to trail by 13 at
the half. Monmouth heated up in the second half, hitting more than half
their shots, but Capital eased away to hand the Scots the second-place
hardware. Corey Turner led the Scots with 14 points and Eric
Cogdill added 10. Turner and Cogdill were named to the
All-Tournament team.

Cleveland, Ohio
Monmouth 74 (1-2), Case-Western 73 (2OT)

of the second overtime to propel the Scots to the win. Corey Turner
forced the second extra session with a layup of his own with :14 seconds
left in the first overtime to tie the game at 64-64. The overtime
periods were nearly duplicates of the first 40 minutes when neither team
could deliver the knockout punch. Case built the game's largest lead,

the game in the final minute on an Eric Cogdill free throw before
Grant and Turner came up with the extra period heroics. Cogdill led the

hit a pair of shots, including a three and Fletcher Morgan
nailed his first shot of the second period as the Scots came out blazing
in the second half. The Mules came back with six unanswered points and
build as much as a 38-point lead in handing the Scots their second loss

double figures, but got 28 bench points and 81 percent free throw
shooting.

Mavericks. Trailing 58-20 at the half, the Scots played nearly even in
the second half before succumbing in the final eight minutes. The Scots,
who used 17 players in the contest, were led by Eric Cogdill's 13
points. |
