| February 10, 1998 SCOTS SWEEP DIVISION PLAYER OF WEEK HONORS Monmouth College swept the men's and women's basketball Midwest Conference South Division Player of the Week honors for the week of February 1-7, 1998. Junior Karen Valentas (Chicago,IL/Mother McAuley HS) earned her second women's honor this season while sophomore Kent Froebe (Tremont,IL/Tremont) was selected for the second time in three weeks on the men's side. Valentas tied a Monmouth single-game record with 20 rebounds in a February 3 home loss to Eureka and was cited for her steady play on both ends of the court. She scored in double figures in all three of the Fighting Scots' games during the week and has now tallied ten or more points in 13 consecutive games. Valentas scored 40 points (13.3 per game average) as Monmouth (12-7, 7-3) split a pair of MWC division contests in addition to the Eureka game. Monmouth defeated St. Norbert 66-51 on February 6 and lost to Lake Forest on February 7 to remain in second place in the MWC South standings. Valentas is scoring 13 points per game and leads the squad with a 9.6 rebounding average. Froebe has come off the bench in the past month to
spark the offense and has helped Monmouth to win eight straight games, all against MWC
opponents. The Scots' streak has clinched their first MWC South title since 1995 and has given
Monmouth (12-7, 9-2) the home court advantage in the upcoming Midwest Conference tournament.
Froebe, who also won POW honors two weeks ago following a triple-double performance against
Grinnell, scored 53 points in the Scots' three victories (17.7 per game) and hit for a high of
27 points in a crucial home win over Lake Forest on February 7. He connected on 6-of-6
three-pointers against LFC and hit 8-of-10 for the week. Froebe was 16-of-24 from the floor
(67%), grabbed 23 rebounds in the three contests and dished out 9 assists. He is currently
averaging 10.1 points per game. |
