Feb. 21, 2009 vs. Grinnell College at Monmouth, Ill.
Monmouth 85 (13-8, 9-7), Grinnell 62
Monmouth led for all but the first minute in an 85-62 win over
Grinnell. Lynsey Barnard's 3-pointer gave the Scots the lead to
send seniors Melissa Gorski and Tanesha Hughes out on a
winning note on Senior Day. Monmouth slowly built a double digit lead in
the first half and quickly jumped up by 20 in the second half. Sophomore
Kim Howard set the Scots' career consecutive free throw mark,
nailing her 20th straight. After making all four of her tosses as a
freshman last season, Howard canned her first 16 this season without a
miss. Hughes recorded her 11th double-double of the season, scoring 24
points to go with 14 rebounds. Gorski matched Hughes' 24 points.
Alison Andrews added 12 and Barnard 10.
Feb. 18, 2009 vs. Lake Forest College at Lake Forest, Ill.
Lake Forest 77, Monmouth 68 (13-9, 8-7)
Monmouth's playoff hopes came to an end with a 77-68 loss at Lake
Forest. The Foresters avenged a last-second loss to the Scots two weeks
ago by jumping out to a 44-24 halftime lead, dropping the Scots to a tie
for fifth in the league. Without any tie-breaker advantage, Monmouth was
eliminated from playoff contention. After staying close through the
first 12 minutes, the Scots fell behind as the Foresters put together a
9-0 run late in the half and then scored the last seven points of the
first half to put Monmouth in a 20-point hole. Monmouth refused to give
in, trimming the deficit to single digits, 73-64 on Tanesha Hughes'
traditional 3-point play with 1:25 left. Lake Forest held the Scots at
bay, making just enough free throws in the final minute (4-of-8) to
preserve the win. Hughes collected her 10th double-double of the season
with 29 points and 14 rebounds. Justine Boone was the only other
Scot in double digits with 10.
Feb. 11, 2009 vs. Illinois College at Jacksonville, Ill.
Monmouth 69 (13-8, 8-6), Illinois College 65
The Fighting Scots played like a team on a mission in a 69-65 win
over Illinois College. Monmouth trailed for the first 17 minutes of the
game, but once they took the lead they didn't let go. Tanesha Hughes
hit two free throws to give the Scots a 26-25 lead with 3:04 left in the
first half and Lynsey Barnard's 3-pointer capped Monmouth's 15-0
run to close out the first half for a 32-25 lead. The Scots stretched
the lead to as many as 14 points midway through the second half, but had
to hit their free throws down the stretch for the win. Up by 1, 66-65
with 17 seconds left, Melissa Gorski hit three of four free
throws to ice the game. Hughes collected her ninth double-double of the
season scoring 24 points and pulling down 13 rebounds - 10 on the
defensive end. Gorski added 22 points. Feb. 7, 2009 vs. Ripon College at Monmouth, Ill.
Ripon 77, Monmouth 64 (12-8, 7-6)
Monmouth gave it a try, but couldn't avenge an early season loss to
Ripon, falling 77-64 at home. Melissa Gorski's jumper at 13:36 of
the first half opened up an eight point lead, but the Red Hawks whittled
the deficit and took a 34-32 halftime lead. The Scots regained the lead
in the second half on an Alison Andrews jumper two minutes in,
but Ripon again responded and nursed a slim lead until hitting eight
free throws in the final minute to put the Scots away. Gorski led
Monmouth with 15 points, Justine Boone added 13, Andrews 12 and
Tanesha Hughes 11. Feb. 6, 2009 vs. St. Norbert College at Monmouth, Ill.
St. Norbert 78, Monmouth 47 (12-7, 7-5)
St. Norbert came out on fire at Monmouth and handed the Fighting
Scots a 78-47 loss at Glennie Gym. The Green Knights hit 58 percent of
their shots in the first half and opened up a 44-26 lead. Tanesha
Hughes paced the Scots with 10 points. Feb. 3, 2009 vs. Lake Forest College at Monmouth, Ill.
Monmouth 80 (12-6, 7-4), Lake Forest 79
Melissa Gorski scored a career high 30 points, but it was her last
two she'll remember in an 80-79 Monmouth win over Lake Forest. Neither
team led by more than seven in a game that saw 23 lead changes and 14
ties and it all came down to the last 30 seconds. Trailing 78-77 with 21
seconds left, Lake Forest's Susan Hedrick took advantage of a Monmouth
turnover and put the Foresters up by one with a bucket in the lane and
had the chance for an old-fashioned 3-point play, but missed the free
throw. The Scots' Erica Puig pulled the defensive board, giving
Monmouth one last chance. After a Monmouth timeout, Alison Andrews
found Gorski, who had worked free for a 10-footer just inside the
paint, for the winning basket with :02 left on the clock. Lake Forest's
bench outscored Monmouth's 35-0, but the senior tandem of Gorski and
Tanesha Hughes more than made up for the bench deficit. Hughes
finished with 25 points and Justine Boone added 11. Jan. 31, 2009 vs. Knox College at Monmouth, Ill.
Monmouth 85 (11-6, 6-4), Knox 55
This one was never in doubt as the Fighting Scots jumped out to a
16-4 lead early and maintained a double-digit advantage for the
remainder of the game. Melissa Gorski's last shot of the first
half gave the Scots a 28-point lead 45-17. The Scots upped that to a
40-point edge on Niki Sue Williams' 3-pointer, her only bucket of
the night. Gorski nailed five treys to lead the team with a game-high 25
points, Lynsey Barnard connected on three treys to finish with 15
points. Tanesha Hughes' 12 points and Alison Andrews' 10
rounded out the Scots double figure scoring. Jan. 28, 2009 vs. Grinnell College at Grinnell, Iowa
Monmouth 91 (10-6, 5-4), Grinnell 62
It didn't take long for the Fighting Scots to gain control in a
91-62 win at Grinnell. The Scots opened the game with a 12-0 run and
never looked back, leading by 18 at the half. The Scots added to that
with a 9-0 run at the start of the second half and cruised to their 10th
win of the season. Tanesha Hughes scored a game-high 21 points
and Alison Andrews recorded a double-double of 16 points and 10
rebounds. Lynsey Barnard drained four treys and finished with 18
points as all five starters scored in double figures. Melissa Gorski
added 17 and Justine Boone 13.
Jan. 24, 2009 vs. Lawrence University at Appleton, Wis.
Monmouth 75 (9-6, 4-4), Lawrence 55
Monmouth led from the opening tip in a 75-55 win at Lawrence. The
Fighting Scots built a double-digit lead in the first five minutes, but
saw that margin timmed to three with 1:15 left in the first half.
Monmouth nursed the lead back to seven, 36-29 at halftime on
back-to-back buckets by Tanesha Hughes. Hughes, who collected a
double-double of 27 points and 15 rebounds, gave the Scots their first
basket of the second half and the Scots were never threatened after
that. Melissa Gorski added 15 points and Justine Boone
chipped in with 13. Jan. 23, 2009 vs. Beloit College at Beloit, Wis.
Beloit 68, Monmouth 58 (8-6, 3-4)
If only the Scots could have played through halftime. Leading 35-34
at the half, Beloit had their guns blazing in the second half, opening
with an 11-0 run to hand Monmouth a 68-58 loss. The Scots played nearly
basket-for-basket with the Bucs in the first half as the teams traded
the lead six times. The Scots' final lead came on an Alison Andrews'
basket with 1:28 left in the first half. Monmouth trailed by as many as
27 in the second half with 6:01 to go, but refused to give up, going on
a 17-0 run to end the game. Andrews led the Scots with 18, Melissa
Gorski checked in with a double double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Lynsey Barnard also added 11 points. The Scots' streak of
consecutive free throws ended at 27 straight when they missed the front
end of a two-shot foul near the end of the first half.
Jan. 17, 2009 vs. Carroll University at Monmouth, Ill.
Monmouth 86 (8-5, 3-3), Carroll 66
Knowing one more loss would significantly hurt their postseason
chances, the Fighting Scots came out firing and posted an 89-66 win over
Carroll. Monmouth's seniors combined for 56 points and 26 rebounds.
Tanesha Hughes poured in a career-high 30 points and snagged 10
rebounds. A night after becoming the sixth-leading scorer in Fighting
Scots' history, Melissa Gorski scored 26 points and ripped down
16 rebounds. Lynsey Barnard chipped in with 20 points as the
Scots hit 56 percent of their shots and connected on all 10 of their
free throw attempts to run their team's consecutive free throw streak to
23 straight. Monmouth jumped out to a 16-6 lead early in the first half,
but Carroll closed the gap to 22-17 with 8:53 left in the half on Leah
Lemke's jumper. That would be as close as the Pioneers would get as the
Scots opened up a double-digit lead they never relinquished on Niki
Sue Williams' jumper in the lane a minute later. The win keeps the
Scots within striking distance of next month's Midwest Conference
playoffs.
Jan. 16, 2009 vs. Lawrence University at Monmouth, Ill.
Monmouth 63 (7-5, 2-3), Lawrence 44
Melissa Gorski
became the sixth leading scorer in the history of Monmouth College
women's basketball and the Fighting Scots cruised to a 63-44 win over
Lawrence. Gorski's magic bucket came in the second half as the Scots
began the second session on an 8-0 run. An 8-0 run to end the first half
posted the Scots to a 19 point lead and they were never threatened in
the second half. Lynsey Barnard paced the Scots, making 6-of-10
shots for 16 points. Tanesha Hughes narrowly missed a
triple-double with 12 rebounds, 8 steals and 8 points. Gorski added 8
points and has 1,071 for her career, passing Jill Schultz' 1,067. Gorski
is 44 points behind Ann Jamieson's 1,109 total. The Scots tied the
school record for free throw percentage, making all 11 of their charity
tosses.
Jan. 13, 2009 vs. Knox College at Galesburg, Ill.
Monmouth 71 (6-5, 1-3), Knox 39
Monmouth led from start to finish in a 71-39 win over Knox. Tanesha
Hughes' first basket of the night gave the Scots the only cushion they
would need in a game that gave Monmouth their first league win. After
the Prairie Fire trimmed the score to 17-13 with 8:35 left in the first
half, the Scots offense kicked into high gear, leading by as many as 15
points late in the half. Hughes finished with a game-high 20 points,
Alison Andrews added 14 and Melissa Gorski added 10. Gorski
needs just five points to move into sixth place on the Scots' all-time
scoring list.
Jan. 8, 2009 vs. North Central College at Naperville, Ill.
North Central 73, Monmouth 63 (5-5, 0-3)
North Central made their free throws in the last minute to win an
otherwise close game at Naperville, downing Monmouth 73-63. In a game
that saw eight ties and eight lead changes, neither team led by more
than eight points until the Cardinals scored the game's final basket in
the final seconds. A pair of Melissa Gorski free throws left the
Scots trailing 64-61 with just over a minute remaining, but North
Central hit seven of eight from the line in the final :54 to stave off
the Scots. Two other free throws - by Tanesha Hughes - gave the
Scots their final lead midway through the second half, but Monmouth
couldn't quite get the edge on the road. Hughes led with a game-high 23
points, Gorski added 20 and Alison Andrews chipped in with 14.
Jan. 5, 2009 vs. Illinois College at Monmouth, Ill.
Illinois College 63, Monmouth 58 (5-4, 0-3)
It was a tale of two halves for Monmouth in a 63-58 loss to Illinois
College. The Fighting Scots led by as many as 11 points in the first
half, but a four minute scoring drought to open the second half allowed
the Lady Blues to pull out the win at Glennie Gym. An IC 3-pointer with
10 minutes left in the second half gave the Lady Blues their first, only
and final lead in the game. The Scots' cold shooting night doomed any
chance of a Monmouth comeback, despite 15 points on five treys from
Lynsey Barnard and Melissa Gorski's double-double of 14
points and 12 rebounds. Alison Andrews chipped in with 14 points
and Tanesha Hughes ripped down 10 rebounds. Dec. 30, 2008 vs. Cornell College at Monmouth, Ill.
Monmouth 69 (5-3, 0-2), Cornell 38
Monmouth took a few minutes to find their basketball legs in their
first action in nearly a month and cruised to a 69-38 win over Cornell.
The Fighting Scots led by just four midway through the first half, but
went on a 12-0 run over a six minute stretch near the end of the half
and led 33-18 at intermission. Alison Andrews led all scorers
with 18 points, Justine Boone added 15 and Lindsie Pettie
collected 10. Melissa Gorski narrowly missed her first
triple-double, pulling down 11 rebounds to go with 9 assists and 9
points.
Dec. 6, 2008 vs. St. Norbert College at DePere, Wis.
St. Norbert 55, Monmouth 53 (4-3, 0-2)
The Fighting Scots battled back from a sluggish first half and took
the lead late, but couldn't stave off the Green Knights in a 55-53 loss
at St. Norbert. Monmouth shot just 30 percent in the first half and
trailed St. Norbert 25-17 at intermission. The Scots steadily climbed
back into the game, taking a 44-41 lead with 7:42 to go thanks to a 13-0
run. St. Norbert regained the lead three possessions later but Monmouth
still had life, trailing 54-53 with :03 remaining. A missed Scots' free
throw coupled with a St. Norbert rebound sealed the Scots fate.
Tanesha Hughes led the Scots with 16 points, Alison Andrews
added 12.
Dec. 5, 2008 vs. Ripon College at Ripon, Wis.
Ripon 74, Monmouth 54 (4-2, 0-1)
A slow start doomed Monmouth in a 74-54 loss at Ripon. The Red Hawks
used a 40-7 run in the first half to cruise by the Scots. Monmouth
outscored Ripon in the second half, but couldn't dig their way out of a
40-15 halftime hole. The loss dampened Melissa Gorksi's 15 points as she
became only the seventh woman in Fighting Scots history to score 1,000
points. Tanesha Hughes picked up her fifth straight double-double,
scoring 10 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
Nov. 30, 2008 vs. Rockford College, Monmouth Thanksgiving
Tournament, Monmouth, Ill.
Monmouth 73 (4-1), Rockford 53
Monmouth picked up where they left off last night in a 73-53 win
over Rockford to capture third place at their own Thanksgiving
Tournament. The Scots were thankful for a strong first half, hitting 55
percent of their shots and holding the Regents to 25 percent shooting as
Monmouth led 30-19 at the break. Monmouth never trailed in the second
half, opening up an 18 point lead midway through the half and
maintaining that margin the rest of the way. Melissa Gorski
poured in 25 points and is just 11 points shy of becoming only the
seventh woman in MC history to score 1,000 points. She added 14 rebounds
for her first double-double of the season. Tanesha Hughes
recorded her fourth double-double this season in five games with 15
points and 11 boards. The Scots went on a 10-0 run to close the first
half and set the tone for the rest of the game.
Nov. 29, 2008 vs. Central College, Monmouth Thanksgiving
Tournament, Monmouth, Ill.
Central 84, Monmouth 76 (3-1)
The Fighting Scots' furious second half comeback fell just short in
an 84-76 loss to Central. The Dutch upped their 52-34 halftime lead to
20 with their first bucket of the second half before the Scots came
roaring back. Monmouth's methodical second half whittled the deficit
down to two with 7:34 left and Alison Andrews' bucket in the
paint knotted the score at 65-65 just a minute later. Two free throws by
Melissa Gorksi gave the Scots their only lead of the game with
2:58 left. Central regained the lead nearing the two minute mark and
finished the Scots off making their last five free throws. Tanesha
Hughes cleaned the glass with a game-high 16 rebounds to go with her
team-high 18 points. Lynsey Barnard added 15 points, Andrews
14 and Justine Boone 12. Gorski ripped down 14 rebounds.
Nov. 25, 2008 vs. North Park University at Chicago, Ill.
Monmouth 59 (3-0), North Park 55
For much of the first half it looked like Monmouth was going to run
away with a victory at North Park, building as much as a 14 point lead
late in the half. Looks can be deceiving. The Scots were able to hold
off the Vikings down the stretch and escape with a 59-55 win. Melissa
Gorski went four-for-five from the line in the last :33 to help the
Scots stave off a furious second half charge by the Vikings. North Park
chipped away and narrowed the gap to one, 54-53 with 1:39 left. Gorski,
who hadn't been to the line all night, then took over with trips to the
line on three of the Scots' next four possessions. The senior finished
with a game-high 16 points. Tanesha Hughes recorded her second
straight double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
Nov. 22, 2008 vs. Augustana College at Monmouth, Ill.
Monmouth 83 (2-0), Augustana 59
Monmouth trailed just once in a convincing 83-59 win over Augustana.
The Fighting Scots built a 14-point lead by halftime after the Vikings'
first basket opened the game's scoring. The Scots lead was cut to nine
early in the second half, but the Vikings could get no closer as
Monmouth's smothering defense created 29 turnovers. Justine Boone's
nine steals was just three short of the school record. Lynsey Barnard
drained four threes on her way to a game-high 18 points. Tanesha
Hughes posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Boone
and Melissa Gorski added 17 each. Nov. 18, 2008 vs. Eureka College at Eureka, Ill.
Monmouth 60 (1-0), Eureka 53
It wasn't pretty, but the Fighting Scots will take their 60-53 win
over the Red Devils in the season opener for both teams. Despite
shooting just 15 percent from the floor in the first half, Monmouth
found themselves leading 19-17 at the break. Both teams shot better in
the second half, but the Scots exploded for 41 second half points and
held on for the win. Tied at 53 with just over a minute left in the
game, Tanesha Hughes' put-back basket gave the Scots the lead for
good. Lynsey Barnard's three pointer and two free throws in the
final 11 seconds iced the game. Melissa Gorski poured in a
game-high 19 points and was 13-of-16 from the foul line. |
