Now in his eighth year of coaching
the Fighting Scots, Steve Bell has built an impressive
resume. Bell’s teams have gone 50-21, including a 10-1 record in 2005,
when Monmouth won the Midwest Conference for the first time since 1972
and Bell was named the league’s Coach of the Year. The Scots reached the
NCAA playoffs that year for the first time in school history. Bell’s
winning percentage of .704 is just a shade behind the school’s two
leaders in that category -- M Club Hall of Famers Herbert Hart (.714)
and Bill Reichow (.712). In addition to his coaching duties, Bell serves
the college as a physical education instructor. He received his
bachelor’s and master’s degrees in that field at Bemidji State.
Defensive Coordinator

Chad Braun was the first
assistant coach named by Bell, following his colleague from MacMurray,
where Braun was the defensive coordinator. He serves in that same
capacity for the Scots and is also the men’s tennis coach and strength
and conditioning coach. He has guided the tennis team to the MWC
playoffs the last two seasons. Braun was an All-MWC gridiron performer
at Illinois College and earned his master’s degree in physical
education/sports management from Western Illinois University.
Offensive Line Coach

Dave Ragone has also been
on Bell’s staff since the beginning, working with the offensive line and
special teams. Ragone, who also worked with Bell for one year at Bemidji
State, played at Ursinus College, graduating in 1992. As the coach of
the men’s golf team, he has led Monmouth to three MWC titles, including
last spring, when the team placed 28th in the nation.
Receivers Coach
Steve Elliott, 8th year
Steve Elliott, who’ll
work with the receivers, is a 1977 graduate of Monmouth College. He’s
entering his eighth year as an assistant to Bell, and he’s also been a
member of the football coaching staff at Monmouth High School.
Tight Ends Coach
Lyle Pierce, 4th year
Lyle Pierce
joined the MC staff in 2004 after a long and distinguished career at the
high school level, most recently at the Roseville-Yorkwood co-op. He
will work with the tight ends.
Linebacker Coach
Derrick Johnston, 5th year
Derrick
Johnston, who will work with the linebackers, has been part of
Bell’s staff for five seasons. He is a 1993 graduate of Blackburn
College, where he was a four-year starter and all-conference linebacker.
He is married to Christine Johnston, Monmouth’s new dean of admission.
Running Backs Coach
Nate Johnson, 2nd year
Nate Johnson
is a former Fighting Scot running back who brings head coaching
experience from Monmouth-Roseville High School. Johnson, who is in his
second year on staff, will coach the running backs.
Quarterback Coach
Mitch Tanney, 2nd year
Volunteer
assistant Mitch Tanney is in his first year of full-time duty on
staff, and he earned the 2005 MWC Offensive Player of the Year award as
a Fighting Scot. Tanney, a prolific passer who has gone on to success
with the Alabama Steeldogs in arena football, will work with the
quarterbacks.
Defensive Back Coach
Dante Daniels, 1st year
Volunteer
assistant Dante Daniels is also in his first year of full-time
duty on staff, and he earned MWC Offensive Player of the Year award as a
Fighting Scot in 2006. Daniels, who shattered MC’s single-season rushing
record will work with the defensive backs.
