1997 Men's Outdoor Track and Field
Season Summary

Monmouth College men's track team once again brought home team titles at the MWC outdoor track championships at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa.  By winning both indoor and outdoor trophies this year, the Monmouth men's team established a new school record of six consecutive championships, breaking the old mark of five straight from 1990-1992.  The men have not lost an MWC meet since 1994.  The Scots won the men's meet with 199 points, topping their nearest rival, Carroll (153), by 46 points.  The men's title was won with superior team depth and balance as Monmouth claimed only four individual winners.  Indoor All-American Chris Sondgeroth became the first Fighting Scot male to qualify for NCAA Outdoor Nationals in two throwing events as he won both the shot put, and discus.  Freshman Rich Johnson raced to victory at 400 meters and senior Aaron Venters led a Monmouth 1-2-3 sweep in the 3000-meter steeplechase.  Six of the Scots qualified for Nationals held at UW-LaCrosse in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.  Chris Sondgeroth  became the first Fighting Scot male to qualify in two throwing events outdoors.  Junior Bob Lindstrom best outdoor throw currently ranks 15th on the national lists.  A third junior with national experience in the throws, Jim Hardesty has qualified in the discus for the third straight year and is ranked 12th.  Three men have surpassed provisional times on the track.  Senior Brian Woodard earned his first qualification in the 400 hurdles, while junior Dennis Staggs has bettered the NCAA standard in the 110-meter high hurdles for the second time.
