1998 Men's Outdoor Track and Field Monmouth College men's track
team continued its dominance in the Midwest Conference, claiming the title
held at St. Norbert College and run at DePere High School in DePere,
Wisconsin. The championship marked the fourth consecutie outdoor
title for the men's team. The Fighting Scots have taken home 9 of
the last 13 MWC outdoor trophies. Senior Dennis Staggs won two races
on the track and got his name in the league record book by erasing the MWC
mark of former Fighting Scot great Charles Burton in the 110-meter high
hurdles with a new conference record time of 14.60 seconds. It was
also an NCAA Nationals automatic-qualifying time for Staggs, who later
claimed the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 55.36 seconds and ran a leg
on the Scots' second-place 4x100 relay. The Scots 4x400 relay team
also claimed victory, which consisted Seniors Toby Vallas, and David
Kimber, and sophomore Rich Johnson, and Freshman Justin Bryant.
Bryant's performance in the sprint corps also qualified him for the
Nationals in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Bryant also claimed
two second place finishes, earning NCAA provisional times the the 100
finals and the 200 prelims.
