MONMOUTH QUALIFIES FIVE RELAYS FOR DRAKE TRACK MEET

MONMOUTH, IL -- Monmouth College will be represented at the prestigious Drake Relays Track and Field Meet again this spring as five Fighting Scot relay teams and one individual athlete have been accepted into competition. The Drake Relays is one of the longest-running track meets in the United States and annually draws some of the finest university, college and international competition. Events are scheduled to begin on Thursday, April 23 and conclude on Saturday, April 25.

All of Monmouth’s entries will compete on Friday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. The lone women’s relay which met the qualifying standard was the 4x400, an event in which Monmouth is the reigning indoor and outdoor Midwest Conference champion. Senior Heather Furrow (Kirkwood,IL/Yorkwood), juniors Christy Keller (Crystal Lake,IL/Central) and Gretchen Vandergriff (Wolcott,IN/Greenwood) and freshman Constance Jackson (Peoria,IL/Woodruff) comprise the relay, which will look to improve upon its season-best time of 4:02.12 from last weekend’s Grinnell Invitational.

The men’s program will be represented in four relays as Monmouth is expected to field squads in the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and sprint medley races. The quartet of sophomore Brian Houzenga (Fulton,IL/HS), senior Toby Vallas (Knoxville,IL/HS), freshman Justin Bryant (Knoxville,IL/HS) and sophomore Rich Johnson (Galesburg,IL/HS) clocked a school-record time of 1:27.26 in the 4x200 and an NCAA-provisional qualifying effort of 3:16.97 in the 4x400 to win both events at Grinnell last Saturday.

Senior Dennis Staggs (Farmington,IL/HS), who posted an NCAA-provisional qualifier time of 14.87 seconds earlier this spring, will compete as an individual in the 110-meter high hurdles and will likely run a leg on the Scots’ 4x100 unit. The Scots also clocked a season-best in the 4x100 last weekend at Grinnell with a time of 42.50 seconds. Seniors Joel Hagaman (Galva,IL/HS), David Kimber (Dolton,IL/St. Rita) and Frank Schweda (Rolling Meadows,IL/HS) and freshman Matt Beverly (Monmouth,IL/HS) also made the trip and will provide fresh legs for the sprint medley relay and alternates for the shorter races.
