The Monmouth College women's
track and field team made it three straight All-American appearances with
their third consecutive trip to the NCAA finals. The Scots had
finished 6th at both the 1995 and 1996 Championships for the college's
first-ever women's relay honors and earned another spot on the award stand
with their 8th-place finish in this year's race. The quartet of
Stacy Brown, Heather Furrow, Christy Keller, and Christy Hickey qualified
for the 9-team final with a preliminary-round time of 48.50 seconds and
then produced a 48.36 clocking to finish 8th overall. The times were
the group's second-and third-fastest efforts of the season. The
All-American award was the third for Hickey, who anchored all three
national 4x100 relay squads for Monmouth. Brown, who ran on the 1995
team, and Furrow each earned their second relay honor and Keller her
first.
Furrow also made the finals in the 400-meter dash, 400-meter intermediate
hurdles. She produced her best two performances of the year at the
NCAA Nationals in the 400-meter hurdles, and event she had not competed in
prior to this season. She lowered her own Monmouth school record to
1:01.54 in Wednesday's prelims and returned with a 1:01.94 effort in the
finals to place 7th.
The Scots finished first in the conference with a final score of 141
topping the closest contender, Grinnell which scored 102. The MVP's
for the Scots were Heather Furrow in the track events, and Tennille
McClure in the field event's. |
