women regained the MWC title in 2000. MC edged Carroll 196.5-194,
hanging onto the half-point lead it had entering the final race, the 4x400,
by winning the event while Carroll placed second, 7.44 seconds behind.
Constance Jackson recorded firsts in three individual events, the long
jump and the 100- and 200-meter dashes, to earn of the meet's three Most
Outstanding Performer Awards. She also ran on the winning 4x100 and 4x400
relays. The latter squad set an MWC Meet record. Other champs for
Monmouth were Melissa Jones in the high jump, Kara Kuhrts in
the triple jump, Jill Hoops
in both hurdle races and Philicia Moredock in the 400. Thanks to a pair of school-records, Jackson and three of her teammates
qualified for the finals
at the national meet. Jackson broke her own school record in the 200-meter
dash, sprinting home in a time of 24.42 in her qualifying heat. The junior
had run a 24.51 earlier this season to establish the former mark. But
Jackson wasn't done. She and her 4x400 relay mates - Philicia Moredock,
Jill Hoops and Elise Estes - also set a school record, and once
again it was a matterof lowering their own time. The quarter completed four
laps in 3:50.48, besting a record that was less than a week old. The same
group ran a 3:50.89 last Friday. Hoops, however, did suffer the heartbreak
of a near-miss, as her 400-meter hurdle time
of 1:02.94 was just one one-hundredth (.01) of a second off the last
qualifying time. |
